The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle inadvertently lost motive power. The driver was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway and became aware that the vehicle was stuck in gear, prompting the contact to tow the vehicle to the residence. After a visual inspection, the contact became aware that the front suspension was disconnected. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 180,000.
Power transfer unit fails to properly engage 4x4 power train in hazardous weather conditions. It is available upon request for inspection. My safety is put at risk as I live in a mountainous area and require tow assistance to overtake obstacles like snow and uneven terrain. The overheating that occurs as a result of my attempts to engage the 4x4 power train system wears down other components on my vehicle; resulting in excess use and increase likelihood of those components experiencing premature failure. The dealer failed to make a concerted attempt to recreate the issue and instead pushes for replacement of the ptu. The vehicle components are inspected at regular intervals to satisfy safety inspections for the purposes of registering the vehicle. However, I am still left to sort out my own safety concerns in the case of the faulty ptu. The warning lights that flash 'svc 4x4' come on when I need to engage the 4x4 power train. It is precisely in those moments when I need the Jeep's 4x4 power train system to engage and it fails to do so each time.
1) the power transfer unit and possibly driveline/driveshaft. 2) the car turns off while driving and all systems lock up, no matter how fast you are going. Power steering fails, steering wheel locks, and the car cannot be turned back on until it is put back in park, which means you come to a full stop and attempt to turn back on. Sometimes the car has no power to turn back on to put in park leaving you stranded in the middle of the road with cars behind you. This has mainly happened while we are slowing down to a stop, but still going 20-25 mph. Thankfully not faster yet. 3) the dealer and another mechanic have identified a ptu issue, but could not reproduce. On 9/2021 the check engine light came on. Took it to a mechanic and they noted: "power transfer unit system operation obstructed, while in the air we saw that the output driveline has excessive play and an oblonged bearing cap. " no further issues until on 11/28/2022 check engine light came on. Took it to dealership and they noted: "found code c14a7= ptu motor component or system operation obstructed or blocked. Checked condition of ptu fluid and found it is contaminated and burnt. Also found that the driveshaft connection to the ptu is very loose on the ptu output splines. Recommend ptu and driveshaft. 1/2025: over two weeks, the car has shut off 6-8 times while driving. 4) no 5) check engine light came on 9/2021 took to a mechanic and they noted: "power transfer unit system operation obstructed, while in the air we saw that the output driveline has excessive play and an oblonged bearing cap. Recommend going to a transmission shop for further diagnosis. " no further issues until: on 11/28/ 2022 service 4wd light came on and took it to dealership recommended ptu and driveshaft no problems after until 1/2025 when drive power started randomly turning off while driving. This has happened 6-8 times in a 1. 5-2 week timeframe.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle lost motive power with several unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was restarted; however, the failure recurred. The contact stated that the vehicle was jerking abnormally with several warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 54,000.
Started my Jeep during one of the coldest days in michigan, and it failed to start. When I eventually got it jumped, there was no power to transmission, and I was unable to shift into park. Engine idle was very rough and was unable to move it in any way.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, the vehicle lost motive power. The message "service transmission" was displayed. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle was able to restart. The contact stated that upon resuming driving, the failure recurred several times after a half to two miles of driving, causing the contact to pull over to the side of the road several times. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was determined that the failure was related to NHTSA campaign number: 19v447000 (power train); however, the VIN was not included. Additionally, the dealer informed the contact that an unknown part needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 85,500.
My daughters 2014 Jeep Cherokee’s power transfer unit (ptu) failed at 90,000 miles—grinding noise, service 4wd warning, and loss of power. Jeep dismissed my case (#91999636) despite the xj1 warranty extension (15 years/unlimited miles) and multiple recalls/tsbs for ptu issues. Dealer quoted $5,500 to repair, leaving me stranded and out of pocket. This is a known defect—Jeep’s refusal to honor xj1 puts owners at risk.
Service transmisión message and loss of power to the wheels not acelerating at all I have to pull over and turn off the vehicle and turn I on so it can reset and continúe driving.
Bought a 2014 Jeep Cherokee, while driving the vehicle one day it started braking while accelerating causing it to jerk the vehicle and had to pull over causing the car to completely shut off. I took it to a dealership to get two recalls fixed on it that I found out about and after getting the vehicle back from the dealership and driving it there has been poor acceleration, harsh shifting gears. I was getting a lug nut replaced on my tire at a dealership. I was about to leave with my vehicle and it wouldn’t get out of the parking brake. Then the service parking brake light comes on the far. I have to get them to look at it again and they find water damage to the parking brake module due to a leak from somewhere. Having to wait on estimates on what it will cost to fix it. Looked into this issue and find out that others have dealt with this as well. With water leakage in the back trunk space and into the parking brake module!! definitely needs to be a recall on this type of major road safety hazard. Luckily I wasn’t driving when this happened or it could’ve caused a wreck. There is a class action lawsuit I was reading about again Jeep for 2014-2020 models due to water damage to parking brake module and I believe there needs to be a recall on this defect from factory.
Unknown. I bought my car used in 2023 it showed that a recall that I’m currently dealing with was fixed in the past with the previous owner and that the warranty on the recall expired back in 2021. Well now I’m dealing with an issue with my car and repairs are way more than the car is worth. Wouldn’t this mean that they didn’t complete the recall correctly in the past and that Jeep should cover it ? I’m left with a vehicle I cannot drive because of them not completing the recall correctly in the past or by using faulty parts. What to do from here? I included what the report.
I started the vehicle and started to drive. The gear slid to park and stop in the middle of the road. An indicator said to check transmission. After pushing it off the road, the next day is driving again. All the check engine sign went off.
Started appearing a month ago, complete loss of power on major highways/interstates. The ptu was supposedly already replaced due to 1st recall (prior owner), but still had issues with replacement. I have 2 children and the complete loss of power terrified me. The ptu is a $3,000 repair/replacement. I was able to put it in neutral and pull over to restart the car, but this has happened a few times! this could have caused major accidents and deaths!!!.
When starting to accelerate the the transmission hesitates to shift, then up to 30 mph or so it the car will stutter / miss fire causing a jerking motion of the car. It will accelerate to a steady speed abourn 55 mph.
This vehicle has an extremely dangerous & ongoing issue related to the 9-speed transmission. Many times the vehicle does not know when to shift, sputtering/sluggish/jerky when accelerating from being stopped and coming to a stop. Frequently the vehicle engages itself into neutral and/or parking brake while driving at both city and highway speeds. This is a very dangerous safety hazard as any motorist trailing behind me can not anticipate the sudden deceleration that ensues. The vehicle then either becomes "stuck" in a gear at too high an rpm at given speed, or engages the parking brake or seems to then be in neutral. These instances regularly frequent, leaving me having to pull off side of roadway in sometimes dangerous position, perform handful of restart cycles in order to clear the condition and be back in a proper enough gear-state to get back on the road. The following cluster warning lights coincide with the issues: "check engine" - "service transmission" - "service parking brake". After a handful of restart cycles, the lights clear from the cluster, but the issues remain. The vehicle is unable to come to a comfortable complete stop without a premature-sudden jerk stop. This throws anyone in the vehicle forward in their seats. Also, when ascending an incline or traversing a decline, the vehicle shifts off-sequence in such a way to violently jerk-kick, feeling as though something in the drivetrain will disconnect itself from the chassis. I have recently attempted to submit a recall request over the phone with Chrysler as these conditions are well documented past recalls that are "no longer open". Most notably Chrysler recall numbers v69, s55, and p31. They will not "waive" repair costs for me. I purchased the vehicle in March-April of 2024 with 87,000 miles. If previous owner & dealership did not address the recall when it was open, I feel it should not be my financial responsibility to correct, nor should I be absorbing the negative equity when traded in.
I was driving on the highway when the ptu randomly locked up as if I hit the emergency brake, and made me come to a stop, no one was behind me at the time and I was able to get the car to the side of the road.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while coming to a stop, the vehicle stalled with no warning light illuminated. The contact also noticed that the electronic brake pedal became inoperable and would not engage. The vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed and determined that the ptu (power transfer unit) had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.
Service awd and service parking brake warnings are present on the dashboard. The problem lies in a bad ptu (power transfer unit) and the dtcm that controls it. Part is not available for purchase and currently back ordered nationwide indefinitely. The cost of the part and labor combined approaches to 80% of the residual value of the vehicle at 118,000 miles.
Vehicle randomly imitates being in neutral when it is actually in drive mode. It has lost power on long hill climbs wthout any downshifting as would be necessary. Vehicle will occasionally accelerate on its own without notice. This has happened both on the open road and setting at red lights. These are sometimes able to reset with the turning off and back on of the motor. These symptoms started very randomly, but have increased in events over time.
The component that has failed was the ptu. It is available for inspection as well. My familys safety and myself along with other drivers safety was put at risk due to the "recall solution" for the failed ptu splines failing causing my vehicle to lose propulsion and setting the parking brake in traffic while at intersections as well as in traffic. The vehicle has not been inspected by any manufacturer, law enforcement, insurance, or any other. There were no service light prior to the component failing it just happend and almost caused us to get hit in the rear. The lights came on after the component failed, and this vehicle has had the "recall" addressed, but the recal is supposed to keep the problem from happening. Not I have "svc 4wd" light on and the vehicle has issues accelerating, no other symptoms prior to the failure. Fixing a faulty component is by replacing it with oe parts or aftermarket better parts, not programing the vehicle to operate in any other condition other than factory. Not program the vehicles ecu to shut the power off to the main drive wheels and send the power to the rear, and to set the parking brake whenever the vehicle is in park so it doesnt roll away because the failed ptu wont hold it like its supposed to. This vehicle has 137443 miles and it shouldnt have any drive train issues being driven on the pavement only 70% highway travel 30% residential/town travel. The w47 recall isnt a fix and the part needs to be replaced to factory. Tuning isnt the solution. Its causing more problems for people who really like Jeeps and costing us more money to fix the vehicle than its worth. Either buy back all vehicles, replace the part the right way, or trade the vehicle in for another of the same make and model same or different trim package. Please do something about this ridiculous "solution" to failed ptu in Jeep Cherokee trailhawks and even other models if they have the same issue. Its just not safe. Its a bandaided scam to make more money.
The contact's wife owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 45 mph, the gear shifter moved to neutral(n) independently and the vehicle stopped abruptly. The contact stated that the driver restarted the vehicle; however, the gear shifter remained stuck in neutral(n). The messages "service transmission" and "service parking brake" were displayed. A bystander assisted the driver in pushing the vehicle to the side of the road and then to a gas station. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 19v447000 (power train). The dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure and informed the contact that the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle lost power and decelerated. While attempting to accelerate, the rpm increased; however, the vehicle failed to respond as needed. The contact stated that the traction control warning light was illuminated. The contact coasted to the side of the roadway and restarted the vehicle and continued driving. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic who failed to diagnose the vehicle; however, the transmission was flushed but the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to a certified transmission shop. The mechanic informed the contact of customer satisfaction program: w84; NHTSA id number: 10221656 (power train, electrical system) and u90 (emissions, power train); and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and repaired; however, the failure persisted. The dealer was contacted and informed the contact that the transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer informed the contact of the failure and opened a case. The failure mileage was 45,815.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving 40 mph, the rpm increased quickly, but the vehicle lost motive power, after which the contact became aware that the transmission had shifted into neutral independently. The driver was able to pull over to the shoulder of the roadway, where the message "please shift to park" was displayed. After shifting to park and back into drive, the vehicle returned to normal functionality, but the failure became a regular occurrence. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign number: 16v529000 (power train), but the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 170,000.
The ptu on my 2014 Jeep Cherokee failed and was replaced. The attached documents were sent to stellantis as a “reimbursement request”, was denied per the attached 10/17 email from Jeep customer care. As evidenced by numerous online complaints as well as NHTSA recalls and class action lawsuits, replacement of the ptu was the result of a faulty design and safety concerns. The stellantis refusal of my claim for reimbursement is unacceptable. What assistance can NHTSA provide to resolve this matter? thank you, [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
While driving at highway speed I loose power on the accelerator, the dashboard tells me to "shift to park" I need to pull off to side of the road without getting hit. Shift car into park. After I do that, the engine starts again and we are back to normal. Sometimes the car turns off during this period and needs to be restarted also, other times it doesn’t . Very scary.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at an undisclosed speed, the contact became aware that the 4-wd warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the vehicle was diagnosed with power transfer unit (ptu) failure. The contact was informed that the power transfer unit needed to be replaced. The dealer was contacted; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 121,500.
I was driving down the road when all of a sudden my car was in neutral and I was unable to get the car moving. Called aaa they towed me to in a state transmission because the transmission light came on. Interstate transmission said there was nothing wrong with the transmission. It’s a computer problem. Soooo we going to fix this anytime soon?.
2014 Jeep Cherokee with 84,000 miles. I took it to a dealership because it had a clicking noise. They said the ptu, power train unit was going bad and the splines were causing the noise. Apparently this can cause the vehicle to stop moving and will damage the transmission if not replaced. I was told the part is on backorder and may take a few months to get in. Received a quote for over $4,000 to replace the ptu.
Ptu is malfunctioning.
The contact owns a 2014 Jeep Cherokee. The contact stated while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal sound coming from the transmission while changing gears. There was no warning light illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. An appointment with a local independent mechanic was scheduled to inspect the vehicle. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 172,000.
My car is a 2014 my put failed in 2020 for the first time, and now in 2024 for the 2nd time. This is supposed to be a heavy duty vehicle and I dont ever take it off road. It shouldn't fail like this.
The power transfer unit (ptu) needs to be replaced. A warning light came on, "svc 4wd". I have 130,000 miles on the vehicle. My mechanic said it will take months to get the part because so many other Cherokees are having the same issue. It would seem to me that if this issue is so widespread, a recall should be made on it. Instead, I am being asked to pay $3,500 to have it repaired once the part comes in. Now I have a car that I am afraid to drive before it is fixed as I don't know if driving it will create further, more extensive, issues.
Ptu issue keep appearing, believe our call should also be included into below recall. Can someone advise please? recall #: [xxx] report receipt date: [xxx} component(s): power train:automatic transmission summary: Chrysler (fca us llc) is recalling certain 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokee vehicles equipped with a two-speed power transfer unit (ptu). Relative movement in the power transfer unit (ptu) between the differential input splines and the transmission output shaft may cause some input spline teeth to wear off, which may eventually cause a loss of engagement between the transmission and the differential inside the ptu. If this occurs, power cannot be transferred between the front wheels and the transmission which results in a loss of drive while the vehicle is in motion and a loss of the park function while stationary. Service 4wd light is constantly on while driving. The Jeep is at over 112,000 miles. My mechanic did a diagnostic check and the code that was provided was c14a7-97 ptu motor-component or system operation obstructed or blocked. I checked with the Jeep dealership for a possible recall and gave my VIN number. There are no current recalls. For 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokees where the ptu has not been previously replaced, the auto maker’s recall number is w47 and the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA)’s recall campaign number is 20v343. At the current moment I’m scared to drive this car. I drive my elderly mother and kids in this car. If these problems are due to a recall I need my car fixed by Jeep. They are the only ones that know how to handle this situation.
The power transfer unit ptu is failing on my 2014 Jeep Cherokee and Jeep knows this is an issue. They have already recalled over 67,000 vehicles for this issue but somehow my vehicle isn’t affected when there’s no way I could have damaged the part myself. The problem has been diagnosed by a Jeep dealership as failing but I don’t want to drive it and have fail in the middle of a trip where I would ultimately lose all power to the vehicle and be stranded in the middle of the road. No warning lamps came on but vehicle has been making a loud scraping metal on metal sound below 35 and when decelerating.
My vehicle had no service light or warnings prior to shutting down in a parking lot. Now it won’t start and says 4wd is unavailable, service transmission. I had to pay for it to be towed to my home. I’m a disabled veteran living on a fixed income and cannot afford to take it to a dealer. Seems to me that the recall w47 20v343000 directly addresses the reason my vehicle is inoperable and so should include my VIN!.
