My check engine light, antitheft light, and the traction light kept flashing. Then I lost power steering and my car ultimately 'died' on the side of the road. It was Fri., Mar. 7, 2014 when this steering anti-theft device issue occurred.

The car involved was a 2010 Nissan Maxima. There was absolutely no activation of the ignition system. After following all trouble shooting advice in the car's manual, I towed the car to dealer where they flagged an issue with the steering lock control unit (part# 487009n00b) and it needed to be replaced. This is all part of the vehicle anti-theft immobilizer system. The cost to replace this unit was $703. 43. I feel this is a serious safety flaw in the 2010 Nissan Maxima. 1. This was a fully functioning car (except for anti-theft circuit glitch) that left my pregnant wife stranded in freezing temps in an empty school parking lot late in the evening. 2. Nissan promotes how safe, reliable and economical their cars are, but the anti-theft system can disable the vehicle leaving driver stranded with only one option, which is, to be towed to a dealer because of ant-theft system glitches. 3. The car, being economical, should not require such an expensive repair because of an anti-theft device circuit malfunction. 4. There are several conditions that can occur that will result in the Nissan Maxima becoming immobilized stranding drivers. I am stating only one. This is particularly dangerous especially to female drivers. 5. I feel that Nissan should come up with an override code or device that will allow a driver to escape from potentially dangerous situations that were created by Nissan's vehicle immobilizer system. Especially when the car is fully functional except for an anti-theft immobilizing circuit falsely telling that the vehicle is not ready to start when it is. I believe this is a serious safety flaw in their vehicle security system. This steering anti-theft device problem happened on Thursday, Dec. 5, 2013.

The car was a 2006 Volkswagen Passat. In April 2009, while driving, the "steering column lock defect" message appeared. As directed, took it immediately to dealership. After service, they indicated no problem could be found. After this, I would have this same error message appear when trying to start the car. Many times, it would take 5-10 minutes of trying before the vehicle would start. Had it in for other service over the past year & each time relayed the problem. They never could diagnose it & said it was probably just an issue with the computer. In April of 2010, the problem started occurring more & more frequently. In late may 2010, could not get the vehicle to start after same steering column lock message. Then could not remove the key. Finally got the key out; however, the dash and internal lights stayed on and ran down the battery. Was able to get a charge to the battery but then the anti-theft system immobilizer engaged rendering the vehicle unusable. After a year of repeatedly taking the car to the dealership, it is now back there but it had to be towed. Doing research I have found that this seems to be a very common occurrence with this make and model of car; however, no recalls, etc. Have been issued and obviously the local dealership was unable to diagnose/fix the problem before it came to the point of the car being totally unusable. This steering anti-theft device problem happened on 04/09/2009.

The car involved is a 2000 Buick Regal. On or around October 2013, I started experiencing difficulty in turn ignition switch off and removing key. Now its worsen where I spend anywhere 5 mins.
