Power Steering Fluid Problems in popular cars

Power Steering Fluid problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Power Steering Fluid problems reported in most popular vehicles.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Chevrolet Traverse

The vehicle involved was a 2010 Chevrolet Traverse. Vehicle identification number (VIN): 1GNLVFED1A_. I purchased my gm vehicle from a dealership in south burlington, vermont, in September 2010. I have driven it for just three and a half years with just 55,000 miles on it, and now after a routine service visit (lube oil and filter, transmission fluid, air filter, and winter tire change) I am now being told that the steering rack and front struts are leaking and will cost $2,262 to repair. Absurd. I was told that it's a safety issue and must be done because my car will now not pass inspection. I have never had to spend that much money on a car repair, much less a car that is relatively new with so few miles on it. In addition, on a side note, my check engine light is now on after the dealership completed the air bag recall on the vehicle. Because my husband and I were so shocked at the steering rack and strut quote, I decided to do some research and have now discovered it's a very common problem in these vehicles, and there is a class action lawsuit out of California. General motors has allegedly been aware of this problem for several years and continues to sell the vehicle. I have four children in my car, and although the service technician told me that my car is safe to drive until I need it inspected in August, after all I have researched, I am afraid my steering will give out on the highway. I truly hope that something will be done to address this apparently widespread safety defect in these cars. This problem occurred on Apr. 17, 2014.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Chevrolet Traverse

The vehicle involved is a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse. Bought this 2009 chev Traverse used in 2011 w 17,000mi. In 2012 at approx 40,000 mi, out of warranty (of course) I notice that in a slow or stopped position and trying to turn the wheel (ie backed out of driveway in reverse at slight angle, put into drive to finish turn to drive away, the power steering acts like it is gone and is now manual steering. This doesn't happen every time but is very intermittent. Next time into dealer on transmission seal recall, I mentioned this as it continued for about a year, happening every day for a week, nothing for two weeks, again for a week, etc. When they did the recall work on the seal, it also stopped the random failure of the power steering. Always at low speed or stopped, either direction. Now at 72,000 mi, it is still doing it more often. Gave up on dealer and had a shop power flush the steering system. Did not fix the failure. Had a real battle turning the wheel when adjusting my parking into a stall in a parking garage. Very frustrating. I see other gm vehicles getting recalled for power steering issues. Hoping mine is next. Was told next would be to either replace the power steering pump at approx $800 or the rack and pinion at approx $1800. Not excited about either but if continues to worsen, won't have much choice. Very disappointed in this vehicle and poor service at the dealer where I bought it. Will not go back for service or to buy, period. I see others mentioning what reads like the same exact issue in this forum. I too am very concerned about family members driving it as well as myself if it occurs at higher speed and motion. No leaks and shop said pwr steering fluid level was fine before flush. Said they didn't know but I said try the flush which was the less expensive option, thinking something was flowing and blocking the pump action. What is the story gm?. This power steering fluid issue occurred Wednesday, Jul. 25, 2012.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Dodge Durango

The car involved was a 2012 Dodge Durango. Heard from a friend with a 2011 Durango that they had low power steering fluid when they had their maintenance check up. I had been hearing a mild grinding noise when I would move my steering wheel at times so I took it in to have it checked. Sure enough, the power steering fluid level was at a very low level. They had to put some in and then schedule an appointment to come back and look for a leak. Came back, found no leak and blamed it on the manufacturer for having an air bubble or something. Friend was right. I guess it is common. Check your power steering fluid levels!. It was 03/13/2014 when this power steering fluid issue occurred.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Ford F-150

The car involved was a 2009 Ford F-150. The VIN of the car is 1FTRW14889_. Cool morning truck was fine day before, but this am steering was "hard" like truck lost it's "power" in power steering. The power steering level was about 1/4 inch below min so I filled to proper level. ( I just had it at dealer and fluid was checked "ok" two months prior). A few days later level had gone down a bit so I added more staying between min and max lines. Next couple weeks power steering would fade in and out (at all speeds) and worked whenever it wanted to. Intermittent hard to turn and at times worked fine. Took to dealer on 4 30 14 (this day steering was working fine) and was told it was a leaking power steering pressure hose operation 3719-a r&r 4. 6l 2009. Cost out of pocket about 390. 44. I am the only driver of this truck and I drive like an old man cause I am an older man, lots of tlc. So why in the heck would this fail so early at less then 70,000 miles? recall needed??. This issue happened on 04/16/2014.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of GMC Acadia

The vehicle involved is a 2010 GMC Acadia. Driving into a small downtown area to meet some friends and heard a whirling noise coming from under the hood (belt, bearing or power steering). As I slowed down the noise intensified, dissipated as I sped up. Notice the steering was tighter and more difficult to turn the steering wheel at slower speeds. The next day I attempted to "check the fluid" secured under the engine cover but was unable to remove it even with the star bit required. I then google'd auto-steering for Acadia and found numerous issues related to failing power steering units. Took it to the dealer frustrated after finding that this is not an isolated part failure. He stated that the bellow was leaking due to a failure (the power steering is under a lot of pressure I was told) and it needed to be replaced. The dealership completed the repair after keeping the car a day. Seems to me this is a potential ticking time bomb and the part may have been under engineered. I have been a long time gm customer but with all the current press I'm not sure I can support them any longer with my patronage. This power steering fluid issue occurred May. 13, 2014.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of GMC Sierra

The vehicle involved was a 2013 GMC Sierra. The VIN of this Sierra is 1GTR2VE73D_. Power steering gear box leaks oil out of front adjustment nut seal. After three replacement gear boxes it still continually leaks. The last attempted fix by a GMC dealer ended with power steering spraying all over everything under hood including exhaust which is a significant fire hazard. Also, when fluid level gets low steering is significantly hindered. It was Thursday, September 5, 2013 when this power steering fluid issue happened.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Acura TL

The car is a 2006 Acura Tl. Since the day of the car purchased in 2006 the steering was very harder than other cars we used before and consulted with the dealer. I was told that Acura Tl is a sports car and the steering will be harder than other manufactures. This problem continued and a recall from the manufacture replaced power steering hose which was defective. I contacted dealer multiple times and was told that the nothing to worry; it is normal for this model. When the situation got really bad, I took it back to the dealer when the mileage was around 120000 miles, I was told that the power steering rack is leaking oil out the end seals and the proper correction is replacement of power steering rack and a possible damage to the pump due to low fluid level. The estimated cost was $1650. 00. I had a very hard time for driving this car for many years and come up with $1700. 00 to fix it. Also the bushing were torn and popped through. According to service technician torn bushing was a design issue for 2004-2008 models and Acura changed the body style later to correct the problem. In order to fix this wobbling/shaking problem the estimated cost is $681. 00. (due to defecitive body style). According the dealers and technicians I contacted, I was told that these problems are vey seldom and they are due to manufacturing problems. As a customer I have to come up with around $2500. 00 to fix a defective luxury car cost me more than $35000. 00 in 2006. What a shame. The failure date was Sep. 8, 2008.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Acura TL

The reporting person owns a 2008 Acura Tl. The contact stated upon start up he notice smoke and heard a hissing noise underneath the hood. An independent mechanic examined his vehicle and stated the power steering hose deteriorated prematurely, resulting in the power steering fluid leaking on the catalytic converter. The manufacturer was alerted of the failure; however, stated that his VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 12v222000 (steering) or NHTSA campaign number: 08v091000 (steering). The contact had indeed experienced the failure described in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 86,000. This issue happened on Tue., Apr. 1, 2014.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Honda Accord

The car was a 2003 Honda Accord. The VIN of the problem Accord is 1HGCM66543_. Around December 2012 I started noticing a loud whining noise coming from the power steering pump on a cold start along with a whining noise when slightly rocking the steering wheel back and forth. After a couple of minutes of the car warming up the noise goes away. Now I have received a recall letter NHTSA campaign id number: 12v222000 just recalling the power steering hose to be replaced. (letter received on 3/12/2014) I immediately took my vehicle to the dealer on 3/13/2014 and had the hose replaced under the recall and also paid for them to go ahead and replace the o-ring in the other hose to see if that was the cause of the problem also. They stated without a diagnostic test they wouldn't know for sure if it is the steering pump or not (understandable), but when my car was finished, the service tech informed me that the mechanic discovered my rack and pinion are now leaking fluid and want to charge me $1,220. 00 plus tax to fix and not to mention that I still do not know yet if the power steering pump has now gone bad because of this. I find this totally unexceptable and I believe the whole power steering system is faulty and should be covered under recall. It was 12/02/13 when this power steering fluid issue occurred.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Hyundai Santa Fe

I bought a used 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe with 71,500 mile, seemed in good condition when I paid for it, don't know much about the previous owner's maintenance history. About 1000 miles later this hiss/rattle sound came from the engine as I was driving it, I also noticed when making turns a rubbing sound came from the steering that got worse as the turning angles got more acute, and I began to notice a small leak of reddish fluid I thought may be transmission fluid (turns out to be powering steering fluid). Took it in to the local Hyundai dealer who told me that the power steering return hose line was corroded/leaking. They charged me $250 to fix it. The fix corrected all three observations. . . It was Wednesday, October 26, 2011 when this power steering fluid issue happened.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Infiniti G35

The vehicle involved is a 2002 Infiniti G35. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is JNKDA31A52_. During my evening drive home on a local highway / toll road I smelled a strong pungent burnt oil smell thru the air vents. As I was at the end of my commute I parked the car and noted oil dripping from the right front area of the car. After it cooled off I traced the leak to a power steering line up high at the bulkhead. I pulled the outer chafe guard back and additional power steering fluid poured out onto the ground. The right side bulkhead area was soaked in power steering fluid. The entire area was bathed in fluid however the outer chafe guard on the hose acted as a barrier to prevent the hose from spraying potentially combustible power steering fluid onto the rear bank exhaust manifold. The next day I replaced the hose. I have retained the old hose if needed for inspection. It appears to be leaking at the metal crimp. This sounds just like the Acura and Honda issue. This vehicle is a one owner vehicle, manufactured November 2001 and purchased new March 2003. The vehicle has never had collision damage, is very clean and well cared for. It is driven as a daily commuter vehicle. It was October 2, 2012 when this power steering fluid issue happened.

On November 16th I was coming out of parking garage at chicago o'hare airport. After I pass the pay booth, with in 15 feet at the speed of 4 to 5 miles per hour, I lost control of the steering wheel because of some malfunction of the steering wheel assembly. Steering wheel moved 180 degree in one second and hit the pay-booth. Car hit the side pavements of the pay-booth and caused the flat tire, damage the body of the car and steering wheel got locked. All the power-steering fluid got leaked out. I had a fractured thumb because of the rapid movement of the steering wheel. Car was not drivable and ended up towing to the dealership. Dealer replaced the whole steering wheel assembly. This can be a major safety issue. I was just about to go on high-way. If this would have happened on expressway. . I am not sure I would be alive. This issue happened on 11/16/2011.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Lexus RX330

The vehicle is a 2005 Lexus Rx330. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was 2T2GA31U05_. My dashboard began to show signs of cracking about a year ago. It started to crack around the radio/audio components and spread quickly like a spider web. Lexus agreed to replace the dashboard at no charge, but not the labor costs. While replacing it, they advised me that the power steering rack and pinion had severe fluid leakage on right side, boot deteriorated. The cost of this repair was $1,856. 00. There was also an issue with the left front cv axle inboard joint boot, an additional $412. 00. In reading all the complaints on this website and on the internet, it appears that the dashboard and the rack and pinion are a common problems that Lexus is aware of. A service representative also told me that the RX 350 has a significant problem with the rack and pinion, but Lexus is not willing to do anything about it. I am hoping that this brings light to these issues and something is done about this. It was Thu., May. 15, 2014 when this power steering fluid issue occurred.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Lexus RX330

The vehicle involved was a 2005 Lexus Rx330. The VIN of the car is 2T2GA31U55_. Took vehicle to Lexus dealer for 90,000 mile service and tech found power steering fluid low and dirty. When looking further, tech found that steering rack was torn and leaking. Tech requested to replace the power steering rack and perform a flush. I declined because of the exorbitant cost ($1,000?). This is a definite safety issue and very similar to a complaint filed 11-5-13, NHTSA I. D. No. 10550956. I believe there is a pattern here, the product recalled, and Lexus/Toyota accept the financial responsibility to have the vehicle repaired ASAP. I believe they may have service bulletin no. Lsb-0107-12, NHTSA I. D. No. 10050660, steering, issued to address the problem. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you. This problem occurred on Thursday, December 19, 2013.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Mazda RX8

The car involved is a 2004 Mazda RX-8. Power steering fails due to faulty power steering harness connections. This failure happened while driving on the expressway at 65 mph. (very dangerous). This is a very common problem with RX-8 owners. Power steering connectors are situated directly under coolant fluid reservoir tank overflow hose. If coolant leaks on these connectors it fouls the connection resulting in power steering loss. Insufficient soldering of these connectors to the connection housing by the manufacturer is also to blame. This harness has been revised 3 times by Mazda in hopes of correcting an extremely dangerous malfunctioning part. There should be a recall sent to all Mazda owners to have the faulty power steering harness f151-67-shob and f151-67-shoc replaced with the most recent revised part f151-67-shod free of charge and cost of labor. This power steering fluid issue occurred Fri., Aug. 5, 2011.

The car was a 2008 Mercedes Benz Ml350. The VIN of this Ml350 is 4JGBB86E98_. Rack and pinion leaked all the fluid due to a defective part. I replaced the powerstering pump few month ago and paid close to $1200 (possible the back rack damage it then). Now the sterring rack needs to be replaced and the dealer wants clost to 2,000 to fix it, they are using refurbished parts. According to the dealer mb is not supplying new steering racks anymore, mb only supports repairing kits to refurbish defective ones. This is completly insane, first they put a defective part in the vehicle, that they charge you an arm and leg to replace it with a refurbished one. E recall is a must and mb should be forced to put new parts as the steering system is very crucial to safety. It was 03/28/14 when this power steering fluid issue happened.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Suzuki XL7

The car involved was a 2002 Suzuki xl-7. The VIN of the problem Xl7 is JS3TX92V82_. Ac compressor went out twice in my 2002 Suzuki xl-7. Once in August 2009 and again in may 2012. I had to have it replaced twiced because it was a pretty hot summer. It assume if the car last another few years, I will have to replace it again. How annoying! also, after the summer months, during the winter months when I need to turn on the heat, the service engine light comes on. I got this tested and it had to do with the ac compresssor. This makes sense because the xl-7 compressor is dual. It's runs ac and heat. Power steerling has been leaking for the past year. I would add power steering fluid every two weeks or so. But now it's progressively gotten worse. I have to add fluid every other day. Front and back bumper is displaying corrosion. It looks like the metal hinges that hold up the bumpers are wearing and you can see it. This car was not built to last. I forsee many more issues. This problem occurred on 08/01/09.

car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Suzuki XL7

I have a problem with my Suzuki Xl7 2008 VIN/serial [xxx]. The power steering is leaking fluid and have to refill it continuously. The wheel makes noise when I make turns and also is becoming hard to maneuver. I took my vehicle to the south deerfoot Suzuki dealer at 7220 railway st se calgary, ab t2h 3a8 (1-888-284-1809), canada once I noticed this problem. At that time I had 62,000 km (38520 miles) on the vehicle. They could not find any problems. After I got tired of refueling the power steering fluid, I took it to the dealer again. This time I had 65,000 km (43390 miles). They found this time about three possible problems, but since the warranty of this vehicle had expired, I was told that I would be responsible for the repairs. Now, the leaking, the noise, and the maneuver have become more critical. I took the vehicle to a private mechanic shop. They found that the problem could be a seal damaged which connects to front side tire (the driver side)and recommended me that since the vehicle still new (2008) I should contact chacon Suzuki about the warranty. I also had contacted nicholas rockwell, fixed operations manager south deerfoot Suzuki about a possible power steering recall with Suzuki Xl7 2006 that could be applicable to my Suzuki 2008. I have filed a recall complain with NHTSA and I have contacted Suzuki canada in ontario. I have been recommended to contact the chacon Suzuki dealer at 3566 I-35 s, new braunfels, TX 78132 phone: 830-624-7000 and the south deerfoot Suzuki dealer david baker dealer principal mdbaker@shaw. (I am an adult and have had previous experience driving vehicles with no power steering, my teenage children would have not known what to do or how it feels to lose power steering, so I am thankful that this happened while I was driving the car and not them!) this was an extremely hazardous situation, and no recall? car was completely unsafe to drive. Prior to this incident the vehicle made loud whirling noises when the steering wheel was being turned. Dealership found steering rack-leaking from end seals, they flushed power steering system and power steering gear, pump, fluids replaced. $1987. 49 to make the car safe to drive again. car   Power Steering Fluid problem of Buick Lucerne

The car is a 2007 Buick Lucerne. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 1G4HP572X7_. When bringing the car in for grinding brakes, my mechanic informed me that my rack and pinion was leaking and my rear struts were broken and leaking. (this was later confirmed with a Buick dealership). I was informed that my car would not be able to pass my yearly inspection without the rack and pinion repair. I was also informed that the repair would be quite costly. I was stunned since I have had nothing but complaints and repairs with this car which I am still paying for, the last past two and a half years respectively. I only have the car for four years. I feel the car is too young to have so many issues especially something as serious as a rack and pinion repair needed. This is a safety issue. I cannot drive the car like this except locally and I have to watch the power steering fluid which I have been doing. I also cannot drive it now since my inspection is expired. I do not have the money to pay for this right now and I have had exhaustive issues with this car. I approached Buick and they are not receptive. The car is no longer in warranty. The failure date was Friday, November 1, 2013.
