car   Steering Failed problem of Chrysler Town & Country

The vehicle is a 2008 Chrysler town and country. 3 occasions driving my 3 children to school my town and country became unresponsive. The steering failed, breaks and the car went unresponsive. The electric stability control warning light came on. To remedy, I had to put car in park, and restart vehicle. The last instance when this occurred I rolled into a four way stop as my breaks did not work. An online search has shown many other have experienced this issue with the Dodge caravan and Town & Country both made by Chrysler. Took van to dealer who said diagnostic test showed nothing (other people report this same experience). They updated the pcm software. I find it hard to believe a software update would render my car safe to drive and be the factor that caused it's whole system, brakes included to shut down. This issue needs to be looked at. Mini van drivers carry children!. It was 05/15/2013 when this steering failed issue occurred.

car   Steering Failed problem of Dodge Ram 2500

The car is a 2009 Dodge Ram 2500. Car was brought in 5 times to have various front end recalls performed , two different dealers bedard brothers in cheshire mass. And beterra for stering recall (now n49/NHTSA 13v-529) previously same recall had two or three different numbers. They have never had the parts and could never perform the recall. Because they say that the steering may fail at any moment I have used the vehicle only when I absoluely have no other transoportation. Hence as of today the car has 17,200 miles only. The other problem is loss of coolant , the egr cooler has been leaking , I have had it at dealers three times and they have no clue how to repair . This is a common coplaint. Because this internal leak goes into the turbocharger. The turbocharger failed and on 7/08/13 had to be replaced at 16,150 miles . That was the symptom of the egr cooler leak, but the cause (leaking egr cooler was not addressed then or on two following trips to the dealers. On to bedard and one to berterra. The Chrysler case number may be 24954056 after dealers worked on car two trouble codes appeared p052 and p0700 I don't want to continue driving a car that the steering will fail at any moment or the engine may blow because of coolant loss. car   Steering Failed problem of Ford Fusion

The car involved is a 2012 Ford Fusion. The VIN of the problem Fusion is 3FAHP0HAXC_. The power steering quit without warning, luckily the car was just getting under way. The car had previously indicated a fault with the system (the warning light on the dash would flash for a moment, then go out) the dealer said 'no code had been stored' so they could not diagnose any further. My concerns are 1) the steering could have failed on the highway and caused harm or death 2) with the available technology today, why doesn't the computer 'store a code' so the dealer can diagnose and repair before a deadly incident occurs?. car   Steering Failed problem of Honda Civic

The vehicle was a 2003 Honda Civic. Crash was involved with the Honda Civic. I live on a main road, so I was thankful that there was no heavy traffic at the time, that it luckily was minor, and no one was injured, however, this has the potential to cause fatality. As I was driving out of my driveway and turning right out onto the road, the steering wheel stuck in the turning right position and both steering and brakes failed to work causing me to crash into a parked car. I am not sure why the steering and brakes both failed like this? strangely, my car was driving fine after the incident as the police officer pulled it to the side of the road. It is smashed up and needs body work and possibly mechanical work. I did have it towed to the dealership, as I did not trust driving it after this happened, and I am not sure I will ever feel safe in this car. Currently, my insurance is taking care of it, but this was a malfunction on Honda's part and should be dealt with by Honda on all fronts, cosmetically, mechanically, financially, and most importantly so that this doesn't happen to someone else or me again. Otherwise, there is no justice or protection for the consumer! this could have potentially been and could be life threatening. This problem occurred on 06/19/2013.

The car was started and driven out of the garage on to the street, approximately 50 yards later while driving about 20 mph, the brakes 100% failed and the power assisted steering stop working. After coasting to a stop and placing the car in park. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor. The dash board flashed a stop sign symbol and a message that increase pedal pressure would be required. The car was turned off and restarted. At first the brakes and steering seem normal but after about 10 seconds, again the brakes and steering failed. At this point a tow truck was called and the vehicle was towed to a local mechanic. The car was inspected and the failure was repeated. The shop inspected the car and diagnosed the car with a computer. Several codes were apparent. The shop recommended that the brake system be flushed and the computer reset. The electrical system was inspected as well as the batteries. The car has been returned to service today. I am concerned that the brake system should not be designed in a way that a computer failure would render the brakes useless and fail 100%. If the brakes were to fail at higher speeds and in traffic, there could have been fatal results. My wife no longer feels safe driving this car. This issue happened on Nov. 25, 2013.

car   Steering Failed problem of Mercury Mariner

The vehicle is a 2008 Mercury Mariner. As driving I went to turn right when the steering failed, it was like an old car with manual steering. Between abruptly forcing the brake pedal to the floor and trying to force the wheel to the right, I managed to go across the street and into a farmers field ( good thing I bought it with awd). When I restarted the vehicle the steering worked fine. After reading similar scenarios on the internet. I then later contacted Ford care and the wonderful personnel tried to tell me that it is not a concern of Ford since it not an issue for Ford at this time. Failure of steering seems to be major safety concern to anyone who drives a vehicle in my opinion. The worst part of this issue is I deal directly with an automotive supplier of steering column assemblies to Ford and other manufacturers in indiana. By knowing what is under plastic and Ford telling me I need to replace it, I ask what quality is in the rest of the vehicle. It was Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013 when this steering failed issue occurred.

car   Steering Failed problem of Saturn ION

The vehicle involved was a 2006 Saturn Ion. As I was driving to the store I made it about two minutes from my house when I made my first left turn. As I started to turn I noticed my steering was getting difficult, then the three beeps and a display of pwr str went off on my car. Lucky I wasn't on a busy road or thruway on my way to work or school because as I turned into the nearest parking lot the steering was almost impossible. I had it towed to my repair ASAP and was told my power steering motor had to be replace. This repair like any other cost a few hundred dollars that I was surely very unhappy to dish out. I am the second owner of this car and after already receiving the recall notice of the ignition system I went online and checked if there was any recall in the past on the steering. I was surprised to see my websites with people who had the same problem as me however there was no official recall just gm would repair the steering if brought to their dealership, had I known this I would of taken it there. So the next day I called gm's customer service line to hopefully get reimbursed my repair bill since if they are aware of the problem they should be responsible to repay for it instead of just offering to make a scheduled appointment with their dealership to perform the maintenance whenever they're available. I was told since there are four reasons for the steering to fail there hasn't been a final recall made and therefore they are unable to reimburse me. The only advice I got was to wait around for the official recall and then once I receive it then go through the reimbursement cycle. I am not happy about this at all, if gm knows there is a problem they should take responsibility for it. My steering went off completely without notice and I easily could of been in an accident!. It was 04/16/2014 when this steering failed issue occurred.

The vehicle is a 1999 Subaru Outback. There was crash involved with this Subaru Outback. I heard a clicking in my car when on an entrance ramp. It did not sound too serious, but I made a note of it. I went on the highway and within a half a mile my car began to weave. The steering appeared to fail and I went into a spin. I could not steer the car and lost control. The brakes were working but at the speed I was going (40-45mph) I hit the left barrier after going over two lanes. There was no rain or ice but the road was in really bad shape from construction. I had experienced that weaving sensation before in the subraru on uneven roads but nothing like this ever happened. I am lucky to be alive. The airbags deployed and the car was totaled. The shop did not really check what went wrong they said the axle and brakes and tires seemed fine. The car could not start and apparently the timing chain had been damaged. The failure date was 10/21/03.

car   Steering Failed problem of BMW Z4

The vehicle having this issue was a 2005 BMW Z4. The car had been sitting outside in approx. 85 degree weather for about 2-3 hours. My wife and mother in law were driving done the highway. She initially noted that the steering felt "sticky" or "different". A few moments later while traveling at approx. 55mph the steering failed to respond or more accurately felt stuck. She was unable to turn the steering wheel and the car started to move to the right side of the road toward the guard rail. After slowing the vehicle and continuously trying to turn the wheel it finally responded. She pulled off the road and sat for a few moments to regain composure and check vehicle. There was nothing outwardly apparent, no flats, nothing under car, nothing wedged in engine compartment or underneath car. She exited the highway and drove slowly back to the house. The car did exhibit signs of "sticking" again, but did not lock up. A quick search on the internet has revealed this is a very common complaint on the Z4. This is a very serious safety concern and now my wife is afraid to drive the car. This steering failed issue occurred Wednesday, April 23, 2014.

car   Steering Failed problem of Buick Enclave

The vehicle was a 2009 Buick Enclave. I have already issued a complaint regarding this issue and continue to have issues with not being able to turn the vehicle in traffic. There have been over 60 complaints filed with the NHTSA regarding steering failure of this vehicle and similar platforms while in traffic. Gm has already been shown to fail to correct safety issues despite having knowledge of such (hence the current significant media coverage). There is a class action suit against gm in relation to this issue (the judge so far has ruled against gm to have the suit dismissed giving validity to the issue). I kindly request NHTSA re-evaluate this issue and initiate an investigation. I apologize for using this section to inquire but did not locate any other means of inquiry.
