Steering Rack And Pinion problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Steering Rack And Pinion problems reported in most popular vehicles.
The vehicle involved is a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. I lost complete control in the steering column as I was turning left at an intersection in traffic. The steering wheel freely turned 360 degrees, but the tires did not move. I had no way of controlling the vehicle as it was moving in traffic. Had I been on a highway or traveling at a higher speed, I could have been seriously injured and injured other drivers! the mechanic my vehicle was towed to stated that it was the rack and pinion component of the vehicle and there is currently a technical service bulletin for that component. Steering function is a vital component of any vehicle and I find it scary and appalling that this occurred and is not covered by a gm recall. Driving a car at any speed, not to mention highway speeds, without any steering control is extremely dangerous. The failure date was May 20, 2014.

The car was a 2004 Chevrolet Malibu. Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is 1G1ZS52F64_. Since I purchased the car in 2004, it has been at the Chevrolet dealer 4 times for the steering column and rack and pinion. The last time I brought it in was round 2007 and it started going out again in 2008. I was fed up with taking it to the dealer, so filed a complaint and was hoping it would get recalled. I checked the recall list for this year and found my vehicle was not on the steering recall list. I am very upset and will never purchase another gm car again. I refuse to pay out of my pocket for this ongoing issue. It was 04/01/04 when this steering rack and pinion issue happened.

The car is a 2005 Chrysler town and country. This problem has happened multiple times of the prior 2-3 years. We bought the van used and the problem has happened multiple times since purchased. In the rain or when there is standing water on the road, the power steering will fail. This usually happens at lower speeds, and often while lowing down or turning. The power steering will stop temporarily and you lose all control of the vehicle. This has happened to my wife twice while she was turning in traffic. The power steering will start working again usually in less than a minute. It is very dangerous, as you have no control. It only happens when there is standing water in the road during or just after moderate to heavy rain. There have been multiple reports of this problem on the Chrysler forums. We took our van to a mechanic and they replaced the rack and pinion, but the problem has persisted. I have read o n the Chrysler forum where others have replaced the power steering pump, pulleys, belts, etc. And still have the same problem. This steering rack and pinion issue occurred December 1, 2011.

The car involved is a 2006 Chrysler town and country. The VIN of this vehicle was 2A4GP54L96_. I am hearing a loud whine. It sounds as though it is coming from the front of the vehicle and can be heard more loudly inside the vehicle than out. It is constant. It is usually louder in cold weather. It is not as loud immediately following when I have my vehicle service and all fluids are topped off. Lately it has began to make a bit more of a grinding noise. The noise is very noticable at low speeds--not so much at higher speeds, but then again there is more road noise at high speeds. If parked and I turn the steering wheel, the whine gets louder. The pitch seems to change with engine speed, not movement. I took it to an auto shop and they said it is the power steering pump, rack & pinion. I have researched this on the internet, and there are hundreds of identical complaints. This is clearly a defect in the vehicle. Why hasn't this been recalled yet? if left unfixed, the power steering can fail. I would have a hard time trying to steer this vehicle without power steering and it would likely result in a crash. This is clearly a saftey issue. This problem occurred on 07/01/13.

The vehicle involved is a 2006 Dodge Dakota. Was traveling down a regular road when the power steering became very tight and then alternately a little while later became very loose causing over correction. About a month and a half later while traveling between washington and oregon the power steering went out completely in the vehicle. Had the pump and reservoir replaced as well as intake and outtake lines. Problem was not solved had to then replace rack and pinion, vehicle still leaking after this replacement as well. Vehicle has been to two different mechanics both of which cannot determine what the problem is causing the power steering to malfunction consistently. After replacing rack and pinion was also told that ball joints needed replacement. This steering rack and pinion problem happened on March 4, 2014.

The car involved was a 2012 Ford Fusion. Driving straight and steady 45mph on surface street, no traffic, no braking or lane change. Suddenly chimes sounded, "service advanced trac" in message center and yellow advance trac idiot light on. In about 20 seconds chimes, message and light go off and message text returns to real time mpg reading. Continued driving home without shutting engine off or any further warnings/incident. Took to dealer 7am next morning (4/3/2014) at 15753 miles. At end of day service advisor said test code showed bad "torque sensor" which is in the steering column and measures turning effort on the steering wheel and that they needed to keep vehicle overnight. 1130am next morning (4/4/2014) spoke to service advisor. He said car fixed by changing the rack and pinion gear assembly w/electric steering motor (Ford part number: ae5z-3504-ce). Before and during incident I never noticed anything wrong with steering or braking--just the warnings. Vehicle repaired under warranty. This steering rack and pinion issue occurred 04/02/2014.

The car involved is a 2009 GMC Acadia. Over the last year the turning on my Acadia while at slow speeds has gotten progressively worse. This especially happens at lower speeds, but I have always been able to complete my turn. In April it finally got worse where I needed "brute force" to make a turn and I almost hit another vehicle. At this time the automobile is an "accident" waiting to happen and I will not let my wife or daughter drive it anymore. I have taken the car to my mechanic and he has replaced the power steering pump and rack and pinion and the problem still continues!!! he does not know what else to do! I see that there are many other out there having the exact same problem. Gm needs to find a solution to the problem and fix it!! this is a 45k car and these types of problems should not exist, and if they do, they should be handled by gm promptly. I am planning on filing a lawsuit as soon as I find a lawyer familiar with these gm issues. It was Wed., Apr. 23, 2014 when this steering rack and pinion issue happened.

The vehicle involved is a 2008 Acura Tsx. While driving home the power steering failed. After having the car towed to the only only Acura dealer in town, the trouble was diagnosed as a rack and pinion failure. When we suggested that was an atypical problem for a vehicle with only 87, 000 miles the dealer agreed it was not typical. Two days later we learned that the same dealer had just done the same repair on the same model with less than 50, 000 miles. After doing some searching online we discovered that the Acura Tsx rack and pinion system has failed in a number of the vehicles with at least one accident caused by it. Since steering loss can create a significant accident risk, I think these vehicles should be investigated. This problem occurred on Aug. 30, 2013.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2010 Hyundai Sonata. Driving along at about 35 miles per hour when vehicle engine died. Restarted vehicle and it was almost impossible to steer. I was near home so I was able to get it home where it stayed until I could get it towed to a Hyundai dealer. The dealer replaced power steering pump, the power steering rack and pinion, gear and linkage assembly and performed a 4-wheel alignment. I was extremely blessed that I was not on the local interstate going at the maximum speed allowed. I note that there are numerous complaints about the steering on the 2010 Hyundai Sonata and other earlier and later year Sonatas. It seems there should be a recall before someone is seriously injured or killed. It was Monday, October 14, 2013 when this steering rack and pinion issue occurred.

The vehicle involved is a 2013 Hyundai Sonata. I purchased my 2013 Sonata ltd with standard engine 08/17/12. After the first 300 mi or so I noticed while driving at any speed the vehicle “drifts”, which requires constant steering correction to maintain a straight line. The faster the vehicle is traveling the more prominent the drifting, so at highway speeds this can become tiring, which could cause loss of control momentarily, with severe consequences. This vehicle is designed with electric steering that functions normally for turning but there is an inherent design error in the steering control that allows there to be physical “play” in the steering wheel. This “play” is similar to autos that have many miles on them. They would have rack to pinion wear or bad steering bushings causing a gap in the steering movement left and right from center. The Sonata's “gap” also occurs when the steering is off center during vehicle turning and has to be passed through to keep the vehicle on track. The gap on the Sonata is about 1/3”. This causes the "drift". By contrast, I also own a 2013 Hyundai elantra with conventional power steering and there is absolutely no play in the wheel, thus the vehicle goes exactly where pointed without drift. In va. Where I live, given a scenario where the vehicle was older and going through a standard annual inspection, this steering “play” would cause the vehicle to be rejected as having a safety issue, which would be required to be repaired. The NHTSA should without delay require Hyundai to recall and repair this issue by removing the steering “play”. How many owners does it take who actually complain before action will be taken? I would venture a guess that this issue affects every Sonata of this design. I noted this same problem being reported in previous years of this design after the recall with some reports describing potential accidents. That's a lot of cars!. This problem occurred on Sep. 1, 2012.

The vehicle involved was a 2010 Infiniti M35. Driving with cruise control on, 70mph zone, slight downhill speed of 72mph. New rear tires, very good condition front tires, 1 day old 4 wheel alignment, concrete highway surface in sunny dry conditions, approximate outside temp 65. Vehicle and steering wheel jerked to the right with steering wheel displacing approximately 30-45 degrees from center to the right, followed by a jerk and displacement to the left of approximately 30-45 degrees to the left and repeated to the right and left again. . . Car was uncontrollable. . . Reduced speed, killed cruise control, lightly applied brakes. Car became more controllable as speed was reduced. Major auto repair location and ase certified mechanics diagnosed as problem with rack and pinion, possibly "a stuck valve" causing excessive steering inputs to be allowed at higher speeds than normal. The failure date was Saturday, April 12, 2014.

The car is a 2013 Kia Motor Optima. VIN of the vehicle was 5XXGN4A73D_. I agree with the may 24, 2013 - scottsdale, az overview regarding wind. The car is easily affected and moves in the wind and is a challange to stay straight in the lane. I feel like other drivers must think I am a drunk driver. The car does not really drift but the steering is sluggish with play and dead spots/harder to make first part of a turn, (almost like steering sticks). Also as someone else said, the steering is a challenge on the highway at higher speeds and is hard to maintain in the lane. . . . May also be a suspension problem. It is easy to lose control at high speeds if the roadway is not perfect. Constantly fighting the loose steering to the point where again, it looks like I am a drunk driver. Increasing the air in the tires was of no help toward the steering stability. I spoke to the local kia dealer service manager (February 2012), and he noted that the conditons sounded typical of what he has heard with the newer model Optimas which have the electronic steering. He was going to check with kia for their thoughts. No response yet. What ever happened to the good old tight, rack and pinion steering? enough of this mushy steering, this is suposed to be a sporty car. . . Am I finding out that it is just good looks? I have owned and driven similar priced Chrysler and Ford products prior to this and never uncomfortable with the steering. This steering rack and pinion issue occurred Wed., Sep. 12, 2012.

The vehicle involved was a 2011 Kia Motor Sportage. When driving over a speed bump, dip or uneven road you feel a vibration in the steering wheel like a springy feeling and you feel like something is knocking against something underneath the car. I took the car to the dealing for inspection. The tech claimed he could not duplicate the problem. The tech and I took a road test together, with me in the car pointing out was I was feeling, it was then the tech could feel it understood what I was talking about. His first thought was a bolt came loose on the rack and pinion. After inspection that was not the problem and said the rack and pinion needed further inspection. A new rack and pinion was installed and removed due to it not being faulty. After the car being in the shop 9 days we still have no conclusion. The problem is still there. I have to wait up to 35 days for a kia engineer to come and inspect my car. While the car was in the shop I also had the regular service done and new front brakes put on. The tech took my car on another road test before giving it back to me. While on that road test, my airbag light came on. The tech took my car back to the shop and had to replace a clock spring. After picking up my car yesterday while driving home I was dealing with the car pulling to one side. First it pulled to the right, then for the rest of the ride home it continued to pull to the left. The brakes don't feel right either. You have to push hard and even while your pushing on the brake its like the car doesn't want to stop. I think there is air in the line, but not sure. Car goes back to the shop this Monday for the brakes and the pulling to one side. It was Thursday, August 30, 2012 when this steering rack and pinion issue happened.

The car is a 2003 Land Rover Freelander. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was SALNY12283_. This vehicle rack & pinion makes a noise every time you turn left. Contacted the dealer and was told that no action will be taken to correct the problem, in fact I was told it will happen to the right later. Contacted the manufacturer direct , they are aware of the problem but it is an engineering defect that the company does not want to correct. I am afraid that I will be stuck with a vehicle that may loose steering control if this part that is rubbing against the other part in this rack & pinion system fails. I wish someone from the NHTSA finds out what exactly is this problem and why it cannot be corrected. This steering rack and pinion problem happened on Sat., Jul. 31, 2004.

I have done almost everything possible to resolve the problem with the subject vehicle, from sending letters to the dealership to Mitsubishi motors sales of America to the maryland state attorney general's office. There are questionable practices being employed by ourisman Mitsubishi and m. M. S. A. Also, m. M. S. A. Sent a regional rep. To assess the referenced vehicle and the rep. , who claimed to be an expert on the referenced vehicle is not a certified mechanic nor is he a degreed engineer. And, I still have difficulties steering - have a constant cluncking noise from the front end and now have been told I need the rack & pinion replaced - estimated cost $550. The vehicle currently has 82,000 miles. The steering & suspension problems began immediately after the vehicle hit 50,000 miles. This issue happened on October 9, 2013.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was 5TEWN72N24_. I have a 2004 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck. This has had a very bad for a year. The other day the mount for the right rear broke and the front end of the rear spring was rusted away from the frame. This is the same problem my 1996 Toyota pickup had. That one one the bought back and I now have this one. The rest of the truck is pretty good. The rack and pinion steering also rusted away and started to leak flind. This laek was under the right mount of the rack. This was also fixed by me. This is my work truck and personal way of getting around. These are both very serious safety problems !!! I contacted the ceo of Toyota, Toyota sales in califorina and girard Toyota. They said I slipped through the cracks and I did not get any notices !!! they are putting tons of frames on for other peoples but I have been singled out some how and I cannot get one. Ths problem has been going on for 20ty years !!! this with out question should be a recall and all items concerned should be replaced free of charge. Please help with this serious problem. Thank you. The car was a 2010 Volkswagen Cc. After purchasing vehicle from dealership, I noticed an audible whirring sound coming from the steering system. The vehicle was at a standstill and can be heard when turning wheel to left or right from lock to lock. At first it was a faint whirring sound as if the vehicle was low on power steering fluid. However, the system is electro-mechanical. No hydraulic pumps. The sound has gotten progressively worse and the whirring sound is noticeably more audible. Upon taking it to the vw dealership, service technician says that the entire rack/pinion system has to be replaced because it is defective. Vehicle is less than 40k miles. Service tech says that this is not covered under any warranty. I have found other incidents of this make/model having the same issues, where some systems have completely failed within the first 10k miles. This is a safety issue as there may not be any warning if the system completely fails. This problem occurred on 10/28/13.

The car is a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The VIN of this Passat is WVWVD63B13_. Front end noise was diagnosed by vw service as missing and loose rack and pinion steering bolts, rendering the vehicle unsafe to drive with 20,000 miles on the odometer and normal use. This is a huge safety hazard, I could have been injured or killed. I have an extended warranty but this is not covered. Such a flaw in steering integrity should generate a recall - before someone is killed. This steering rack and pinion problem happened on November 7, 2007.

I want to bring to your attention that there seems to be a problem with the Volvo Xc90 2005 rack and pinion going bad. I have been searching over the internet and there are so many people that are having the same problem. There must be an inferior workmanship/component, that is causing this part to become defective for so many customers. This problem is seriously dangerous as it causes the vehicle to develop sudden steering problem causing the vehicle to shift steering uncontrollably as soon as the brakes are applies when driving over 30 mph which can result in accident. The type pf shift (pull) tends to be even more dangerous when driver 60 miles an hour and it happens in very sudden and unexpected way. I hope that you take this seriously and you arrange for Volvo to complete a recall or contact me about this as soon as possible. The consumer stated there was a lot of stiffness when driving on the highway. The problem worsened after a few weeks and the vehicle became too dangerous to drive. The consumer took the vehicle to a local mechanic and it was determined that the tie rod end was faulty. The consumer called a local dealership and was informed there was a recall on the tie rod ends, but they were replaced back in 2006. The consumer stated the replacements parts were not up to standards. The local dealer did not want to replace the defective parts, so the local mechanic shop replaced the tie rods at a cost of $401. 83. Updated 06/16/10. This problem occurred on 01/23/2010.

The car was a 2006 Audi A4. VIN of the vehicle was WAUKG78E56_. Power steering fluid is draining from reservoir faster than I can put it in. This is one problem too many on my Audi. The car is a 2006 A4 purchased new in March 2007 therefore 5 years and 3 mths and 60,000 miles. From what I can't read on the web, the oil is lost in the rack and pinion box. This is the fourth time at Audi dealer in past 6 weeks, two electric window regulators, bearing front wheel and now power steering problem that I think will go in the 600$ to 1000$ repair. I've had many cars and since my two past Audi's, I've replaced parts that I had never heard before even if I kept my previous cars 7 years and 160,000 miles. This is definitely my last german product in my yard. Audi has a nice design but that is it. You need at least two cars in the driveway to own an Audi, that way you are not stuck. My dealer has quadrupled his service area, now I know the reason. It was 06/22/12 when this steering rack and pinion issue happened.

2003 BMW Z4 roadster has an intermittent sticky steering issue that adversely affects the ability to control the direction of vehicle in traffic. The condition is due to high ambient temperatures or after parking car in hot weather. The steering wheel will not allow the driver to steer a straight line without constant, sudden corrections that require use of the entire lane of traffic. A bicyclist was almost struck by vehicle which prompted this complaint. The failure happens every time the car is driven in weather above 75 degrees f and parked in sun. The condition will dissipate when car is parked in shade or temperatures fall for a prolonged period. BMW dealer servicewriter was contacted and knew nothing about other Z4 vehicles with electric steering having this issue. Dealer advises replacing the entire steering upper column assembly and the lower rack and pinion with an estimate of $4943. 00. Owner is exploring options for repair or replacing vehicle with a newer model. This issue happened on Jul. 26, 2010.

The VIN of the problem Srx is 1GYEE63A34_. I own a 2004 Cadillac Srx with only 75,000 miles on it and the steering gear (rack-in-pinion) has to be replaced now for the 2nd time. The first time it had to be replaced was after the car just went out of warranty with only 57,000 miles on it and Cadillac would not repair it under warranty, only 7,000 miles out of warranty?? how often do you have to replace the steering gear on a bwm, Volvo, Lexus, infinity or even yet a yugo at only 57000 miles? the car has been perfectly maintained, serviced and kept in excellent condition. It was replaced with a brand new steering gear from classic Cadillac. Now only 18 months later and 17000 miles the steering gear has gone bad again. This is a very expensive repair and Cadillac/gm is telling me that the part only comes with only a 12 month, 12000 mile warranty??? this is obviously a defective in the design of your product. I called the 800-458-80006 customer help line and have little confidence that Cadillac will help me with this problem. My car is now going to be tied up in the shop for several days and is going to be a huge inconveniences and expense to myself and family. Please let me know who I can speak with at Cadillac/gm to talk with about this obvious defect in your product. This steering rack and pinion problem happened on Thursday, July 7, 2011.
