Steering Pinion Shaft Problems in popular cars

Steering Pinion Shaft problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Steering Pinion Shaft problems reported in most popular vehicles.

car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Chevrolet HHR

The vehicle was a 2006 Chevrolet Hhr. There appears to be a large amount of cobalt and Hhr owners with complaints about suspension clunking noises. Research shows there is an issue with the stabilizer bar parts and also the intermediate steering shaft. These problems occur at many intervals of mileage ranging from 10,000 miles and up. Gm has since sued the manufacturer of the intermediate steering shaft for those replaced under warranty equaling $30mil. I am unlucky as my vehicle was out of warranty (3yr/36000 miles) and could not get any of my suspension and steering problems fixed by a known issue from gm. They have stated that the intermediate steering shaft is not a safety concern. Now, if a part that is vital in connecting the steering column to the rack and pinion system is not a safety concern, then I believe gm executives are more concerned with cost of doing the right thing than safety of their customers. These are parts that keep a vehicle from flipping over during sharp turns at highway speeds and that keep the car traveling in the direction the operator determines using the steering wheel. After replacing the parts to correct my issues, the problem has re-occurred. The parts were not changed so even after "fixing" it, it would eventually return. This steering pinion shaft problem happened on Wednesday, April 1, 2009.

The failure was recurring the vehicle was taken to the dealer and diagnosed that the intermediate shaft, rack and pinion would need replacing. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The repair was made three times but to no avail. The manufacturer was contacted and stated that they would be liable for the repairs if they found that the exact same repair was needed to correct the failure. The vehicle was inspected again and the dealer stated that the bushings were what needed to be replaced. The bushings were replaced however, the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure multiple times. The approximate failure mileage was 3000. It was June 1, 2006 when this steering pinion shaft issue happened.

car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Chrysler 300M

I noticed when driving my 2000 Chrysler 300m over bumps there is a clunking noise. My steering has noticeable play and when I make turns the steering wheel seems to bind slightly and I have to give a little more force to correct the wheel back straight instead of the wheel spinning freely back into place like normal. Also when turning the steering wheel left or right there is this popping noise that I can hear and feel in the wheel. I recently had the inner tie-rod ends, outer tie-rod ends, and adjuster sleeves replaced. A wheel alignment was also done. I test drove my car after the repairs and there is the same exact problem as before. I did see my old inner tie-rod ends and the bushings were worn, but I guess that was not the main problem. We put the car back on the lift rack and all the other visible suspension components were tight. I went online to see if anyone else had this similar problem and I was shocked of the outcome. There are so many complaints of the steering and suspension components of the lh car (300m, intrepid, lhs, concorde). I read that there are many cases of the rack & pinion gears going out. I also read that the bolt that tightens the steering shaft to the rack & pinion shears of and then you loose complete control of the vehicle. I have read that there were a few deaths and possibly more caused by this rack & pinion failure or the bolt shearing off. I now have to bring my car back in and try to explain this to the mechanic. I have read these complaints in so many different websites and there are so many complaints in each website. I hope and pray this problem of loosing control of the steering does not happen to me. I will take my car in immediately for an inspection. In conclusion, Chrysler should have come out with a recall for this or at least give out a notice for this known complaint and have and updated bolt kit for the steering shaft so they do not shear off. Everyone should feel safe when driving. I know that I no longer feel safe. The failure date was 07/16/10.

car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Dodge Ram 1500

The vehicle having this issue was a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500. The VIN of this vehicle was 1D3HV18T69_. Safety recall n08/NHTSA 13v-038 issued 2/13. Letter recieved that 'parts required to provide a permanent remedy for this condition are currently unavailable. Chrysler will contact you again by mail, witha follow up recall notice when remedy parts are available. ' continued to call dealer and continuously told parts have not been recieved yet. In may 2013, had dealer confirm rear axle pinion nut was tight (they still did not have parts to fix recall). Have in writing that nut was tight and all was fine. Aug. 16, 2013, the nut fails and driveshaft snaps free (gears sheared off). Lost complete control of vehicle due to rear wheels locking. Luckily had just exited rt 80 on to side road. Dealer confirmed all due to pinion nut failure. Dealer ordered all new parts to rebuild truck. When asked if this will render the recall 'fixed' he says no. We still have to get the recall pinion nut fixed on the new part. But there is no fix!! so they are basically placing my family in a death trap again. Who is going to stop the blatant negligence at this point? isn't this site for the protection of the people? help us! this isn't a hot spilled cup of coffee. This is not a frivolous request. It was Aug. 16, 2013 when this steering pinion shaft issue occurred.

car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Ford F-150

The car involved was a 2004 Ford F-150. The VIN of this vehicle was 1FTPX14574_. In low speed and high speed turns, power rack and pinion, the steering becomes very stiff causing the vehicle to turn hard, feels like the truck has manual steering. This issue is most common on slow speed however I have encountered the issue at highway speeds. Research I have done indicates this is an issue, backed by a member of a local Ford dealership service dept, of a failure of the universal on the lower steering shaft. The part # for the replacement part is as follows. . . #8l32-3b676-b. Ford dealership does not have a recall on this yet, I'm a deputy sheriff who has knowledge of Ford recalling the same type part on the Ford police interceptors which we currently use in our fleet. This loss of steering control is very severe. It was Oct. 15, 2013 when this steering pinion shaft issue happened.

car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Ford F-150

The vehicle involved is a 2012 Ford F-150. The problem started with about 400 miles on the vehicle. I began noticing a loose/nibble feeling in the steering wheel especially over rough terrain, which is 90 percent of michigan roads. When temperatures get hotter the problem is more severe. I have had 4 power steering rack and pinions (epas) replaced and each time it fixes the problem but for only a few days and then it reappears. I have also had the entire steering shafts replaced and this did nothing. The problem has become much more severe as time has gone by. I am now experiencing the vehicle pulling and jumping while going over uneven surfaces in the road. There are over 1000 people with this exact problem on other public websites. I can now slightly move the steering wheel back and forth while the vehicle is off and you can feel looseness/nibble in steering and also a very loud knocking of parts coming from the rack and pinion (epas). Parts banging against each other is not normal! everytime I put my 6 and 10 year old kids in my truck I fear for their safety along with my own. Ford motor company doesn't want to admit that they have an issue. I have heard from two representatives from Ford that during production of these vehicles it was known that a number of defective rack and pinions (epas) were installed during the assembly. I have also ran into a person that oversees the quality department (won't mention where) but told me that Ford is having all kinds of problems with their steering and told me to have them replace the epas system which I have already had done 4 times. I guess its going to take someone dying before Ford will take action and fix their problems. Its very unfortunate but is the reason why I am reporting this. My next stop is the local news to share my story!. This steering pinion shaft issue occurred Monday, April 30, 2012.

car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Hyundai Santa Fe

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is KM8SC13E04_. The vehicle involved is a 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe. The contact heard a noise similar to liquid touching a hot surface. An independent mechanic confirmed that the air conditioner was leaking onto the pipes, the rack and pinion, and the fuel tank cover, which has also caused them to rust. The contact has an extended five year warranty; however, the dealer stated that they would only make repairs when the steering fails completely, which could result in a crash. She informed the dealer that a mechanic changed the fluids and stated that the crankshaft could have seized due to the rust and caused a loss in steering control. The mechanic performed regular maintenance checks per the mileage requirements. The transmission fluid, serpentine belt, timing belt, air conditioner belt, and power steering fluid were replaced in April of 2009. In March of 2009, the vehicle underwent frequent oil changes and tire replacements at the dealer. At that time, she was never informed of any rust being present. The independent mechanic confirmed that the rust occurred over time. The invoices for all repairs and maintenance work is available. The contact asked the dealer to speak with the mechanic for specific details, but was unsuccessful. She is familiar with the magnusen-mofact 1975 title 15, chapter 50 , sections 2301 -2312 of the u. S. Federal code, which authorizes her to have repairs performed by a repair facility other than the dealer. The current mileage was 61,000 and failure mileage was 60,000. car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Mitsubishi Eclipse

The car involved was a 1998 Mitsubishi Eclipse. The rotors on my brakes lasted a good month and a half before they started to shake violently when I would try to gradually brake from speeds between 45-65 mph. Today I was exiting the freeway at about 65 mph and it felt like they just weren't stopping me. There was no pressure. I had the brakes checked out and the pads are like new, the rotors show some warping, however im not sure a warped rotor can cause brake failure. Id like to feel a lot more comfortable while driving my car. Im glad nothing extreme happened. The failure date was Thursday, January 15, 2004.

I took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed that the steering shaft both upper and lower with the coupling needed to be replaced because of safety concern. My personal opinion is that Nissan should include this type of repair in the recall for 2002 to 2004 frontier/xterra/pathfinder recall for the steering shaft because of the similar problem. I have made this request to Nissan but was turned down. It was 11/14/2010 when this steering pinion shaft issue occurred.

car   Steering Pinion Shaft problem of Saturn VUE

The car is a 2008 Saturn Vue. Whirring/whoosing and slight groaning/vibration coming from steering wheel when turning from a stopped position and at low speed. Power steering fluid was low and filled at that time. Symptoms continued. Vehicle was diagnosed and repaired by gm service. The steering shaft boot was greased and the technicians replaced the steering gear assembly rack and pinion. Additionally, the steering pump was flushed and filled and a front end alignment was performed. Although we were out of warranty, the original estimate was half and the parts were noted as "good will parts only/warranty". We appreciated this gesture from gm; we absorbed the labor costs. Since the repair we have begun to notice a slight groaning/vibration again when turning at start-up. This seems to disappear while driving. Note: having done some research, our issue seem to be a problem with some 2008 Vue vehicles. The failure date was Tuesday, June 21, 2011.

Researching about this problem online, it was evident that many Rav4 owners were experiencing the same situation. This a common problem with many Rav4s. A so called dependable car should not have this problem before reaching 100,000 miles. Certainly, Toyota must clearly know that this is a common problem and should address it as soon as possible because this problem could potentially lead to an accident which can disrupt the safety of our communities. This problem occurred on 08/22/2012.
