Author message janice g mazurek dds Jan 24,2008 location: ventura California Volvo 2007xc90 broken ball joint causing accident- ________________________________________ without any warning while driving my Xc90 with 14,000 miles the right front ball joint fractured causing me to loose steering control and veer off the road. Luckily I was traveling 30 miles an hour with no cars close behind and I was able to move the car safely off the road. The car was towed to the local Volvo dealer. The following day I was told repairs would be in the $10,000 range. Needless to say I was shocked, and I called my insurance company to report the incident. Even though I reported that I did not hit anything in the road they concluded that with this much damage, all on the undercarriage, that I must have. Not wanting to be held responsible for this I was told by the dealer to call the 800 Volvo american number to report the malfunction claim. They sent an "inspector" who concluded that I hit and object with my right front tire rim causing the tire to turn in . The strong ball joint is fractured,it would take some forceful impact for this to happen. There is not a scratch on the body of the car,and the rim is scrapped in one area as a result of driving on the rim after the ball joint failure caused the tire to turn in. . So I am faced with costly repairs,a car I will never be able to trust again, and an accident on my unblemished driving record of 35 years . The claim of a faulty ball joint was reported to Volvo-they 'concluded','our observations indicated the damage was the result of some type of impact, forcing the wheel inward. "this needs to be investigated for the safety of all drivers.
