Front Suspension Coil Spring problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Front Suspension Coil Spring problems reported in most popular vehicles.
The vehicle having this issue was a 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt. The VIN of this vehicle was 1G1AK55F06_. Out of the blue my vehicle began to shimmy & shake. At first I thought it may be the wheel alignment. According to the dealershing my front arm bushing needs to be replaced. Now the car is squeaking when you turn the wheel to. Got a 2nd estimate: the bushing, swaybar link, & steering & suspension need to be replaced. What the heck? after I just had to have the ignition coil replaced. It burned out the 1st one I put in plus brand new spark plugs. This is ridiculous. This front suspension coil spring issue occurred Friday, July 1, 2011.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2005 Chrysler town and country. Vehicle was parked in driveway on 5/22/13. Very loud bang was heard approx 7pm but the source of the bang could not be identified or even confirmed that it was vehicle-related. No abnormal physical appearance of vehicle was detected at that time. Next morning, 5/23/13, drove vehicle out of driveway and noticed a rubbing vibration in front end, then smelled rubber burning. Turned vehicle around and drove it back to driveway and parked the vehicle for a total distance driven of about 1000 feet. As vehicle was parked, clouds of billowing white smoke from right front wheelwell appeared. Inspected outside of tire. No apparent problem. Opened hood. No apparent reason for white smoke. Then boom, and right front tire blew out and tire rested on wheel rim. Called tow truck and when vehicle was lifted on the tow mechanism, the problem was evident. The right front coil spring had broken in half and uncoiled itself. The spring had uncoiled itself into the inside of the tire and was responsible for the rubbing vibration, burning rubber smell and smoke, and the blowout. This failure could have easily have happened while driving which would have resulted in a sudden blowout and likely loss of control of the vehicle. The last 25 miles driven prior to the coil spring failure were freeway miles, and the failure could have happened an hour earlier on 5/22/13 at 60 to 70 mph with the likely outcome that the vehicle would have become uncontrollable and run off the road and rolled over. Dealer said that in his 30 years, he has not heard of this happening. Failed parts have been retained by owner. Pictures are available if requested. It was 05/22/2013 when this front suspension coil spring issue happened.

I own a 1998 Dodge Ram 2500, I have noticed this problem on multiple Dodges and read about it on the internet, the front lower axle mount rots out due to poor design leaving nothing to hold the spring in place my coil mount is rotted out and there is barely any left of it, and Dodge nor do any auto part stores sell coil mounts to replace it the mount is welded directly on the axle so the axle housing would need to be replaced, this is very unsafe if the axle were to give out dew to this. This problem occurred on Mar. 7, 2014.

My 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab is located in new england where road salt is used in the winter. The undercarriage is rusting because of this, the most dangerous aspect, however is the coil spring front mounts, or buckets that hold the bottom springs to the front axel assembly. Dodge hasn't offered to recall Dodge trucks to repair this dangerous design flaw, whereby the coil mounts were insufficiently coated, and improperly designed to trap salty water in them to accelerate the oxidation process. This is not unlike the safety issue Ford windstar minivans had with their axels that trapped salty water during winter and caused them to rot out and snap causing injury and death. My close friend who owns a mid 1990's Dodge ram truck, who had his coil spring bucket actually fail causing his front end to lunge forward, he was driving slowly when it happened so he wasn't injured. I haven't been able to find any data on injuries related to failure of the coil spring mounts, that doesn't mean they haven't occurred. Dodge should be required to at the very least, provide a kit to truck owners that repairs this problem free of charge. It was Friday, February 21, 2014 when this front suspension coil spring issue occurred.

The vehicle was a 2002 Acura Mdx. I purchased the 2002 Mdx on 12, January 2004. At that time I questioned the hard shifting from first into second. It would lurch, shudder, and jump from standing still to first gear, all the way through the gears. I was worried that the transmission would be damaged as well as other parts. On 27 July, 2004 the transmission began to rock front and back, with loud grinding and metal to metal sound. The dealer explained there was a recall on the at and an oil jet cooler was needed. Over the next 7 years I had my Mdx serviced at the dealership. Each time I would complain about the noise at speeds between 20-30 and 35-45. Again I was told nothing could be done. The engine broke the side motor mount, again I was told that nothing could be done. Finally on 6 July 2011 while driving 75 on interstate 71, my transmission reeved into the red area on the gauge, atf was blowing out the back and covered the back window. I pulled over and the transmission seized on the spot. The Mdx was towed to the dealership were I was told the oil jet cooler had a drain nut, that came out, thus releasing the atf. The drain plug and atf was replaced, but again I was told there was nothing could be done as the defect was a part and not covered. The shop manager told me that the shock and spring was rusted and leaking fluid. I was told that both motor, the timing belt, the shifter cable and connection, outer tire rod, boots needed to be replaced. I searched the internet for 5 minutes and discovered thousands of complaints related to the transmission. I confirmed the recalls on the shocks coils transmission, and multitude of other components. I had the timing belt, every belt, water pump, and motor mounts replace at another dealership in town. This is a dangerous problem. As long as there are 2002 Mdx's on the road and Honda Acura ignore or deny the problem. The risk of death is great. The failure date was January 12, 2004.

component: suspension:front:springs:coil springs
details: vehicle description: passenger vehicles. Road grit and gravel associated with winter road conditions can penetrate the rubber of the lower front spring mounts and accumulate in the mounts causing notches or pits to develop. These notches can develop cracks resulting in breakage of a bottom coil of the spring. Consequence: the vehicles ride height could be affected causing noise while the vehicle is driven. The vehicles dynamic stability can be affected reducing the drivers ability to maintain control of the vehicle. Corrective action: dealers will replace both front springs and lower spring mounts. The failure date was Monday, September 19, 2011.

I own a 2002 Honda Odyssey. On July 22, 2006 while I was parking the van in my garage, I heard loud clanking noise from the front left side. Later next day, when I was backing up the car, a metal piece fell on the ground. It turned to be **suspension spring coil**. I read from other consumer sites that, in 2001 and 2002 Honda Odyssey models this is a known issue. Luckily my extended
warranty covered the repair expenses. I sure hope NHTSA would investigate into this potentially dangerous issue. For now, I am just hoping the other coils don't break while driving. This front suspension coil spring issue occurred July 22, 2006.

The vehicle involved was a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe. Started to back my vehicle out of the driveway and heard a loud grinding noise. Stopped, got out and inspected to find that the front right coil spring had snapped and punctured my tire. Vehicle is undrivable and had to be towed. There was absolutely no warning. I have read dozens of other complaints about this same thing happening on other 2005 Hyundais. Hyundai really needs to look into this problem/defect. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 1J4FF68S4X_. I have a 99 Jeep Cherokee sport. The front end becomes uncontrollable at highway speeds when driven on anything less than perfectly smooth flat roadway surface. Applying the brakes makes the front end shimmy horrible and dangerous. You must slow to regain controll, also dangerous on highways. Online research shows this is a common flaw with Jeeps that have a coil-sprung front suspension with a track bar or panhard bar, referred to death wobble. This is very dangerous!. The vehicle involved was a 2002 Mazda Tribute. I was driving home and the front coil spring broke{the top portion} when it broke it blew out my tire and loged a piece of it in between the brake rotor some how tearing the tire to bits. And then apx a month after that the other one broke luckily it di not do the same damage as the first time. So because of the cheaply made and wrongfully heat treated metal the spring broke. Which cost me a tire of 165. 00 and to replace th spring at the cost of 273. 69
this should be a recall because someone is going to die after looking in to it Ford explorer, and the escape which is the exact same as the Mazda I found this has been a issue for alot of people. A sping of all parts of a car shouls never break like this. This could have and should have been prevented by not over heating the steel that the spring was made out of the is clearly neglect on Ford manufacturing and needs to be addressed before someone dies. Because I was able to maneuver my car so I didn't hit anyone or anything the next person may not be so lucky. . . . This front suspension coil spring problem happened on Jun. 24, 2011.

The vehicle involved is a 1998 Mercedes Benz C280. While traveling on the interstate at 70 mph, the spring perch supporting the left, front coil spring broke. Instantly, the left front suspension totally collapsed leaving the left front wheel without any suspension or wheel clearance inside the fender. This in turn caused the left front bumper to nearly drag on the pavement. I understand this is a design defect in mercedes automobiles that use this same or similar spring perch. This type of part is one that should never fail unless due to an accident. Fortunately, the driver in this case kept her calm and safely guided the vehicle off the interstate. As a result of this incident, I had my 1997 mercedes e420 inspected and it was discovered that one of the spring perches on that car was about to collapse as well. All mercedes using a similar spring perch should be inspected immediately before someone is killed. This is an extremely dangerous situation. The vehicle is a 2004 Volvo Xc70. While my car was parked inside my garage there was a sudden "bang". The following morning I discovered while backing out of garage that the driver side coil spring had broken. Had I been driving while this happened it would have resulted in the shredding of the front driver side tire possibly resulting in a severe accident. The reason I own Volvo is principally dye to it's reputation for safety. In fact, Volvo uses the term safety in all it's advertising. This is a grave flaw and I ask NHTSA to investigate weather this is a common flaw in the 2004 Volvo Xc70 and other Volvo's with this coil spring. This problem occurred on Wed., Mar. 19, 2014.

The vehicle involved is a 1997 BMW 540ia. The VIN of the car is WBADE6321V_. I have a 1997 540 BMW with 180,000 mi. Investigating the cause of a flat driver side right front tire I discovered the front spring strut plate was cracked and allowed itself and the coil spring to contact and cut down the tire. Found NHTSA campaign # 04v183000 describing exact condition. Towed to devon hill BMW in PA. They will not pay to replace spring strut plate. They state BMW does not sell the spring strut plate separate from the strut and since I install aftermarket bilstien struts at 108,000 mi. Which requires the installer to use the existing spring strut plate BMW is not responsible. There is also a record of the car being at another BMW dealer at 135,000 miles where the repair order notes the recall and states they inspect struts and state no further action needed. No mention of retaining clip installation as described in the remedy section of the campaign. I have owned the car since 40,000 mi. I call BMW and referred me back to the dealer service manager which has not changed his position. This front suspension coil spring problem happened on Thu., Feb. 2, 2006.
