The car was a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500. The events leading up to the failure are unclear at this time because one day I drove the truck and it was fine. It sat for two days and when I drove it to work it wouldn't steer. At first I thought it was the power steering pump but upon inspection that wasn't it. It was however low on fluid a bit but not enough to cause it to be steering the way it was. As I put fluid it I watched it go right through to the bottom of the truck. Further inspection revealed that the steering rack was leaking past a seal and the entire rack had to be replaced. Now this is a 2004 Dodge Ram 1500 4x4 and should not be having this problem. We don't go off roading with it or anything else that would cause this and for a three year old truck this shouldn't be happening. It was Thursday, January 4, 2007 when this steering rack issue happened.

The VIN of this Sonata is KMHCF24F3W_. My 1998 Hyundai Sonata has been a challenge to maintain. Twice the driver's side door spring has rusted through and window regulators have failed. This particular incident was a fortunate stop in the car shop to check something else. They discovered that the rack and pinion unit was leaking power steering fluid. I had been complaining to the mechanic that the car "clunked" in the front end going over a bump. This despite replacing the ball joints, struts and one tie rod. It seems that the clunking noise must have been coming from the rack and pinion. They also discovered at the same time that two out of four engine mounts were cracked and the other two were sagging. I'll be replacing those as well and hoping that the car doesn't cause any further problems for a while. I believe in maintaining my cars, but this car seems to have had more problems than most I have owned. The car has also overheated twice, once due to a burst hose and the second time due to a leak in one of the engine coolant temperature sensors in the block. For the latter incident there was absolutely no warning (gradually increasing operating temp over time). It also has the hard down shift from 3-2 (automatic transmission) that others have noticed. I won't be purchasing a Hyundai again as I feel that this is way too many problems for a car with only 90,000 miles on it. The failure date was June 1, 2005.

The car involved was a 2002 Jeep Wrangler. Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is 1J4GK38K62_. We are a Jeep family. Jeep liberty 2002 was brought in for recall on the ball joints on 11/26/06. In early Dec we started experiencing problems with steering. Brought the Jeep into dealership and they quoted us $1680 to replace power steering pressure line &switch & rack and pinion. I was surprised that a Jeep this new would have this problem. Dealership told us that 3 other Jeep libertys were serviced for the same problem within the last weeks. They said it was strange because the libertys had all just had the recall work done on the ball joints. All 3 Jeep libertys had the same power steering, rack & pinon problem after the recall work was completed. Dealership said they thought maybe there was a connection to the recall but could not say that it was definite. I told the dealership that I would contact Chrysler Jeep and see if there are any other problems similar to mine recorded. 1/31 I contacted Jeep customer service (reference #15916486) and talked to senior staff agent angela. The agent said that she researched and no other problems have been reported ; Jeep did not agree that the problem could be related to the recall. I did go on the internet and there are complaints noted on the internet about the same problem. I feel that the Jeep ball joint problem contributed to the steering problem and that Jeep should repair my car at their expense. Jeep disagrees. Do I have any recourse or appeal process to make Chrysler fix the rack & pinion problem or at least contribute to the repair. This problem occurred on Tue., Jan. 30, 2007.

The vehicle is a 2006 Suzuki Forenza. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is KL5JJ56Z26_. This car was purchased in April of 2006 as a brand new car with only 77 miles on it, since that time it has been in and out of the service dept on multiple occasions, the first time being, last year when there was oil leaking all out from the bottom, according to the service dept, it was the seal, a brand new car and the seal just suddenly starts leaking oil everywhere? the last several incidents have been within the last few months for the same problem over and over again, noises from the steering wheel and brake pedal, vibration in the steering wheel, noises and rubbing when you turn the wheel. We were told it was the brake booster and the steering rack, so we were put in a rental and waited for the car to be fixed, before my husband even pulled out of the lot with it after being fixed, it was still doing the same thing, so back it went, we get it back, drive it a few days, still the same thing, so here we go again with another rental, get the car back, same thing again, and yet another rental, now while we are waiting to hear something, our car gets hit while at the service dept by someone stealing another vehicle, of which no one called and told us, we found out when we called to see what was up with our car, so now is it not only still at the service dept but now it is in the body shop, this is ridiculous, this car is obviously a "lemon" and needs to be pulled from the market and anyone who had the misfortune of buying one should be compensated or given another vehicle equivalent to or better then this one. This issue happened on Thursday, Sep. 27, 2007.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2002 Toyota Tundra. The vehicle identification number (VIN) is 5TBBT44112_. Fortunately I was off the interstate when making a right hand turn into a convenience store. . . . . . . . . . . The steering suddenly became almost impossible to turn, actually causing me to turn into the outgoing lane at the store entrance. There was no advanced warning. . . . Just no steering on turns and no brake fluid in the resevoir. The Toyota deal says the steering rack needs replacement. ($1600). . . . . . And could not explain exactly where the fluid went. This was suppose to be a 300,000 mile vehicle, now stands at 116,457. Had to replace a stabilizer as well due to corrosion. I just sold my 1997 grand am with 224,000. And my 1988 Dodge caravan had 244,000 before the transmition went. Toyota and reliability????????. This steering rack issue occurred Tue., May. 8, 2012.

Well 3 days later I carry it back to dealership and they decide the steering rack has now failed and they replaced it. Now only 14 hours after they replaced it is leaking very badly again and is making a growling noise once again. I called the dealership and they said bring it in Monday morning 24 March for the to look at it and see what is going on with it. This issue happened on Mar. 21, 2008.

The vehicle is a 2003 Volkswagen Passat. The VIN of this vehicle is WVWMD63BX3_. New '03 Passat purchased in Dec. '02. Feb. '03 I noticed difficulty with steering when the wheel was turned to the extreme left or right. After several trips to the dealership in which power steering fluid was found to be low and refilled, it was determined that the power steering rack needed to be replaced. In Mar '03, the power steering rack was replaced by Volkswagen under warranty. Nov. '04, I again noticed difficulty with the steering in extreme left or right wheel positions. Dec. '04, vw determines that the power steering rack again needs to be replaced. They claim that there is no larger problem with the car leading to repeated failure of the power steering rack. Likewise, they insist that there is no intrinsic problem with vw power steering racks. However, I find it difficult to believe that two power steering racks from vw placed in the same car in a two year period just happened to be faulty. This problem occurred on December 14, 2004.

The vehicle is a 2004 Audi A4 cabriolet. I began to notice a rattle in the right front when going over a bump. It seemed to come from the suspension. At the same time I noticed a slight thump in the steering when stationary and slightly turning the steering wheel to the right. As the rattle was getting worse, I took the car in to get it checked. The problem was that the steering rack had loosened at one end. It was torqued down and lock-tight put on the bolt. I am fearful of what might have happened had the rack failed entirely.
