car   Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of Chevrolet C/k 2500

The vehicle involved was a 2006 Chevrolet C/k 2500. I purchased this vehicle from a dealer with a one year certified used warranty at 49k miles. Within a month of purchase I noticed an excessive amount of free-play in the steering and noticed a loose pitman arm when rotating the steering wheel and observing this part. I took the vehicle to two different dealers in the indianapolis area. After their inspection and consulting gm concerning this issue, I was told free-play was normal or within parameters. One year later and 69k miles, I take the vehicle in for service (oil & filter changes etc) and to have them please look at the brakes as I could feel a vibration. The vehicle is now out of warranty. . . They tell me now that these parts (pitman arm / steering box) will need to be replaced along with both front wheel bearings to the tune of just under $2,000. I have done my own research and have found many complaints in regards to steering assembly / parts on these trucks. Nothing I have found says that this much free-play is "normal" in regards to this vehicle and in fact, some front wheel axles and wheel assemblies have actually separated from the vehicle. My wheels or bearings (I saw for myself when it was on the lift and I have the old parts) had a dangerous amount of wobble in them, with the right wheel having in excess of 1" of tilt or looseness. This in my opinion does not constitute "normal" play and I question gm's honesty concerning this issue. . . Why is this acceptable when under warranty but needs expensive repair when its on my dime? I believe gm is aware of the problem but is pushing the cost off to their customers. The failure date was 03/14/12.

The car is a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The VIN of the problem Silverado 2500 is 1GCHK23U02_. On July 23 2008, I was backing out of a parking spot and I lost all steering, the pitman arm sheared off. I had installed the fab-tech pitman arm, idler arm, tie rod ends, and steering stabilizer kit. I found out later that the pitman arm, and idler arm, had a recall. I contacted fabtech via email and they told me who to contact about the recall. I later got transferred to another guy at fabtech. He sent me instructions on how to go about the recall to get refunded the original purchase price and get a check for the installation and front end alignment and they are also suppose to send the new idler arm and pitman arm. Fabtech asked that I box and ship the old parts to them and they would then inspect them and send the check and parts. I sent the parts in and then they decided they were not going to honor the recall. I had complete steering failure, luckily I was in a parking lot when it happened. Just hours before I was on the highway. A recall is a recall and they need to honor it for me as well. This steering gear box shaft pitman issue occurred Wednesday, July 23, 2008.

The car involved is a 1998 Honda Accord. This vehicle has been in the taken back to the dealer 4 times in a month and a half. The car shakes at high speeds and at idle (dealer says unbelivable shake is normal). When vehicle is driven for long periods of time it starts to vibrate and hesitate at high speeds the car becomes very hard to drive in the steering wheel, the whole suspension of the car is not secure. The brakes on the car have also been fixed or checked 4 times - it is very hard to break. Their is also a very hesitation in the engine when changing gears. It feels like there may be a transmission problem or an engine mount problem. The tires were replaced with used tires because manufacturer said that there was a flat spot on the tires. I was told that they were replacing the bad tires with new good tires (hoping that all the problems I was having was due to just the bad tires) they replaced them with used tires and didn't balance and align them (this is on the forth visit to the dealer). The problem is still there and getting worse. (dot number: m3ta tiresize: 195/65r15). This steering gear box shaft pitman problem happened on Dec. 28, 2000.

If this had happened seconds before we could have been dead. The front end had a slight vibration a bit before but we didn't think much of it. Hyundai claims no responsibility. I have read, online. Of people who own the same make and model who have experienced "vibration" in the front end. I am at this point trying to get some compesation. My wife and two daughters were with me at the time and it really scared them. This steering gear box shaft pitman issue occurred September 21, 2001.

car   Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of Jeep Wrangler

The car was a 2010 Jeep Wrangler. I have a 2010 Jeep jk unlimited 4x4. I bought the vehicle used from a local dealer in July of 2013, with approx. 10k miles on it. At about 18k miles, I began experiencing the common dreaded "death wobble". I was driving down a country road with my children in the back seats. All of a sudden, while hitting a small bump in the road, the steering wheel began rapidly moving back and forth and the frontend of the vehicle was shaking violently. I quickly stopped the vehicle, checked on my now frightened children, then go out to examine my vehicle. I couldn't find anything obvious, like tie rods or ball joints. So, I slowly drove home. I went over the entire front end. Couldn't find anything. After reading a lot of forums on the matter, I found I am one of many Jeep owners that have/are fighting this same issue. I went ahead and put on a new steering stabilizer, and trackbars, as these are claimed to be the most common issues (even though mine looked fine and had no play). I continually have had the problem and have had it to shop for an alignment, tire rotations, and checking the balancing on the tires. The shop said tires and alignment were fine. We found that there was some play in the sector shaft where the pitman arm connects to the steering gearbox. Some guys are saying they have replaced theirs 3 times in 30k miles. I don't offroad, my vehicle isn't exposed to harsh conditions, where one could expect mechanical failures. I currently have 26k miles on mine, and have been trying to find out the cause, meanwhile throwing $$ and parts on it to try and find the issue. After researching and seeing the large amount of owners fighting death wobble and the component failures which cause it, I feel Chrysler should be held accountable to some level. I think they should be recognizing the problem and the large scale of it, and offering some type of solution to fix the issue. It was Jan. 3, 2014 when this steering gear box shaft pitman issue happened.

car   Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of Jeep Grand Cherokee

The car was a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 1J4G58S4WC_. I hit a small bump and the front end started to shake very intensely. I could feel it in the steering wheel. To stop I had to step hard on the brake, and I was in a center lane of traffic. It was a very dangerous maneuver. Since the first time it happened it has gotten progressively more frequent, even though I have tried a variety of strategies to repair this problem: new tires, multiple alignments, new shocks (twice), replaced track bar, replace sway bar bushings, replaced steering gear box and pitman arm. I have had several mechanics look at it. It is very frustrating. The car is old, I understand that, but there is no logical reason it can not be made safe. Yet it is not safe, despite my ongoing efforts to make it so. I have not yet given up, because of course I can't sell it. If I can't fix it, I might as well junk it, even though the motor runs great. This issue happened on Jan. 16, 2013.

car   Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of Mazda 626

The vehicle had a crash. 1) purchased a used '97 Mazda 626 dx, with 115000+ miles on it, supposedly in decent condition. The vehicle required a new fuel pump, so wasn't in any kind of road use until replacement. After replacing, the car seemed to work fine, but had odd 'jumps' forward in low speeds and stops (making me believe I would run stop signs). The dealership refused this lemon back. 2) after having the car 8wks, & only testing it around the block until all tests completed on the fuel system, it began to steam & make popping noises driving <400 yards at <20mph. After time, the noises got louder, the steam more widespread, and when the gas was pressed there was noticable lack of power for long seconds. Radiator was suspected due to the steam and power issues. During 1 test while braking it jumped/lurched sideways into a weak brick wall. 3) we are military mechanics, & we went through the entire fuel/transmission/oil systems by Mazda's own book. We even removed the engine, completely cleaned the old gunk out, & refilled fluid with only the finest fluids & cleansers, replacing entire sections of the engine with new parts, & still had the same problems. Per Mazda, they kept diagnosing anything from sensors/computer/regulators/hoses/fuel system issues. Extensive searches on-line turned up a horrifying list of 100's of websites that all blasted Ford's buying of Mazda & resultant lowering of quality. All sites reported transmission issues, similar 'diagnosis' from bad Mazda dealerships, & the end result being years of transmission replacements. Tranny's would break down at early mileages. Few reports of satisfaction from Mazda in replacing what had to be known as deffective trannys. The Mazda 626 (all versions '94 to '00) have seriously none-safe transmissions. When we fully eliminated the last of the possibilities, it was the transmission!!! Mazda refused to deal with this, nor issue a valid safety recall of 626's! spent over $2000 on new parts. This is a safety issue!!. This steering gear box shaft pitman issue occurred Mar. 16, 2005.

The vehicle is a 2003 Mercedes Benz C230. I am the owner of a c-230 4 door sedan VIN# wdbrf40j93f386357. I have an issue that I was looking into addressing when another major issue just arrose that I need help from the manufacturer who I have contacted but not received a response. 1) last week I decided to quote insurance and make a change to allstate. Once they put in the VIN# major issues came. The price was way different then what I was paying with Mercury. To make this short, after talking to my broker at Mercury, it turns out my 4 door has the VIN# of a 2 door coupe. I called beverly hills ltd where I purchased the car new. They did nothing. I have the original temp registration from the day I purchased the car new, and the dealer typed coupe not four door and on the lease agreement. I did not notice this. Here are my issues. The coupe is more expensive on insurance - I have been overpaying since 2/2003. 2nd, am I paying a fair lease rate if the VIN# is for another body style. This car has been nothing but nightmare to deal with since the day I purchased it. It has been serviced 8 times, transmission work, 2 computers, camshaft, new radio, idle issues, brake system failed, and so on. It's a complete lemon. It is going in next week again. I have only 21,000 on the car, and drive my 2nd car more a 79 300sd mercedes as it is more reliable then this new car. I need somewhere, someone to go to, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, darren weingarten - phone or email. car   Steering Gear Box Shaft Pitman problem of Nissan Maxima

I faced a rare (I don't know I am thinking it as rare) problem with Nissan Maxima. When I was driving the vehicle in drive mode my friend, sitting in the other seat, accidentally changed the gear to reverse mode then the strange thing happened, the car steering got locked and the car got decelerated very fast (as I was applying a brake) and even though I changed the gear into drive mode the car wont pick acceleration and behaved as it is in the neutral gear. So, the car stopped in the middle of the interstate on the left lane and we almost got killed by the on coming traffic. Since the steering wheel is not moving we are not able to move the car to the shoulder. What we did is we stopped (turn off) the vehicle on the interstate and changed the gear into parking and started it again, after "few seconds" the car finally moved. I am so scared by the event and I wanted to report to some one and I thought may be NHTSA is the best bet. Please tell me whether it will be the same to any car or will that be only on Nissan Maxima.
