car   Electrical Failure problem of Ford Freestar

The car is a 2006 Ford Freestar. The first failure was when I was driving down the road doing just over 55 mph, all of a sudden the van died an I coasted to the side of the road. After several failed attempts to restart the van it finally started and stayed running. I eventually made it home without incident. Had it checked and was told it possibly had an electrical failure but change the fuel filter in case it was an issue with fuel getting to the engine. So we did. It ran fine after that until about 3 months later. We took it to run errands with no problem and returned home. Went to run to the grocery store and the van would not go into gear. It would start ok but not move, wouldn't go into drive or reverse. Thankfully it was at home when it happened and not going down the road like the first time when I had all 3 kids with me. Had it towed to a garage where they found metal shavings in the torque converter. Had a new one put in and it ran fine for about 2 weeks. Then we found cracks in the coil packs and hd those replaced along with all spark plugs. Not sure if that is relevant to the torque problem. Spent $940. 00 to fix the torque converter and another $240. 00 to fix coil packs and spark plugs. The torque converter is a recall on the '04 and '05 and the same needs to be done with the '06's. The failure date was Wed., Jul. 20, 2011.

car   Electrical Failure problem of GMC Terrain

The car is a 2010 GMC Terrain. I started receiving a warning to service passenger air bag whenever my oldest son sat in passenger seat. A heavier person closed the connector circuit, a lighter person was not registering in the seat. If an accident had occurred, a passenger air bag malfunction could have occurred with serious consequences. This electrical failure problem happened on Mon., Apr. 2, 2012.

car   Electrical Failure problem of Honda CR-V

The car was a 2002 Honda Cr-v. Detected a burning smell, similar to an electrical smell like something melted. I did have the headlights on, but it was bright enough in the morning that I couldn't tell that they had failed. I stopped immediately and looked around the cabin, etc. For smoke. I didn't see anything, but I turned around and drove directly to the dealer. The dealer did diagnostic tests, etc and couldn't figure out the source of the burning smell other than it wasn't coming from the vents. I guess he didn't check the headlights. I am not pleased. After leaving the dealer during the daylight hours, I later detected on the evening of Friday, oct 28, that the headlights were not working. I recently within two weeks ago had replaced one of the front headlight bulbs that had burnt out, so I figured that couldn't be the problem. I eventually checked the fuses and they looked fine. I swapped them out for replacement fuses, but it didn't make a difference. I went online and saw from online discussions that there is a headlight switch issue that the NHTSA is investigating at this time. The issue with my 2002 Honda crv and it's low beam headlights surely seems to be part of the problem that's being investigated. I plan to contact the dealer on Monday morning (oct 31) to get my issue looked at, again. But, it won't be during the nighttime hours or when it's precipitating, since it's illegal to drive without my low beams on during those times. Updated 11/17/11 according to the service invoice, the headlight switch had an electrical failure. Updated 11/30/11. It was October 27, 2011 when this electrical failure issue occurred.

A police report was filed and the vehicle was destroyed. The insurance company determined that the failure was electrical. The vehicle was a 2007 Lexus Rx350. All the dashboard instrument warning lights come on and stay on until the engine/ignition key is turned-off. No apparent mechanical or electrical failure as indicated by all the dash warning lights. The sudden appearance of the entire dash warning light system energizing is unnerving to say the least. This has been an ongoing malfunction that the dealer cannot locate or reproduce. The most recent occurrence was on April 7th and again on April 11th, both while the car was in motion and stayed on until the engine was shutdown. The lights did not come on after a restart. The repeating occurrence renders the warning system totally ineffective, in the event of a real mechanical or electrical failure. It was 07/07/2009 when this electrical failure issue happened.

I took my car to the Ford dealer located in ventura boulevard, CA and they told me my car model was not one of those who had the switch that made the car burn. I took my car home and everything seemed to be ok. I went back to spain so I took my american car back to spain too. car   Electrical Failure problem of Mercedes Benz S550

The vehicle shuts off for a second the esp and abs lights would come on, the steering wheel of the vehicle would get stiff, the brakes get stiff the headlights and interior lights would go off, and the command center would reboot. It seems like the vehicle is experiencing a brief electrical failure. I have been complaining of this problem since I purchased the vehicle as a certified preowned vehicle. The first time I took the vehicle to the dealership the replaced the steering control module and the problem persisted. I notified them of the reoccurring problem again and the claimed the where not able to find any faults. I set up a camera in the vehicle and videotaped the problem occurring and the finally took the vehicle for an extended test drive and replaced the central gateway which did not solve the problem. I contacted mbusa customer service to notify them of the safety concerns regarding the vehicle and that I was still experiencing the same problem and I was brushed off saying the were sorry and there is nothing they can do about the problem. This is a problem that could potentially lead to a fatal incident because it involves the vehicle cutting of for a brief second and causing many component not to function during that second and the vehicle is not intended to function in this manner. Mercedes is not doing their due diligence to investigate and correct the problem besides the basic diagnostics that do not yield an error code. I will gladly furnish the video tape which is evidence the issue occurs. This problem occurred on Oct. 20, 2010.

My insurance company will not pay the balance remaining on the car. Bbb stopped "lemon law" case because there was an accident. No attorney will take the case because there is not enough money to be gained. I am without a car; in debt; injured; driving a rental car and working 12 hours a day to buy a new car. Please help me. car   Electrical Failure problem of SAAB 95

The car is a 2004 SAAB 9-5. My wife was driving our 2004 SAAB 9-5 wagon at or around 35 mph when the car, suddenly and without warning, lost its electrical power. She was unable to steer, brake or control the vehicle in anyway. All of the lights were illuminated on the driver's panel. Luckily, there was no on-coming traffic or any vehicle following behind her because she was approaching a curve in the road at the time the car failed. She coasted straight ahead, through the curve, to a stop. She turned the car off, then restarted the car. We called the dealership the next day, and returned the car a couple of days later. We notified SAAB USA that we no longer felt safe in our vehicle and have lost faith in the line as a whole. This incident was not the first one. We experienced this same electrical power loss twice previously in our 2001 SAAB 9-5 wagon. We had thought it was a problem unique to our specific car, but we now believe that the SAAB 9-5 wagon presents a serious safety concern to the general public, in our opinion. We regret that we did not think to report the previous incidents in the 2001 model to NHTSA. We did, however, alert the dealership, who could not find any explanation for the power loss. We decided not to keep the 2001 model when our lease was up, for that very reason. We felt comfortable driving a new 2004 SAAB, because surely this problem only existed in our one car, right? the "what-if's" for these electrical power failures are scary and unthinkable. What if we had been traveling at highway speed? what if there were pedestrians in our line of steering at the time? what if we were turning left at a major intersection? we've had this frightening experience three times in two different model years of the same car. We will no longer be SAAB customers. SAAB should recall all 9-5 wagons before a fatal accident occurs as a result of this power failure. It was 04/14/06 when this electrical failure issue happened.

I noticed my dashboard looked like it was jumpy. All the gauge lines were going back and forth. But it lasted only seconds and really I thought. . . Did that really happen. I got back on the road because the car was driving perfectly fine. Once I got into wilmington, the car started smoking from under the hood, the gauges were going crazy. The gauges were just going back and forth and back and forth like they were possessed! the car stalled, I got it off the road as best as possible, raised the hood and small flames were coming out. I took a towel and through it over the motor and it killed the flames. Check oil, it was fine, had plenty of gas. My dad said it looks like it had an electrical failure and then the fan went out and caused the car to over heat and it blew a head gasket. Not sure why it would have had an electrical failure. The car is parked now because I do not have money to fix it. Has anyone else had this kind of problem?. This electrical failure issue occurred July 3, 2012.

car   Electrical Failure problem of Suzuki XL7

The car involved is a 2007 Suzuki Xl7. Family was traveling to town when we smelled something that smelled like wires burning. Upon inspecting the vehicle, the smell disappeared. Upon leaving the stop sign we were at, we traveled about a quarter of a mile & the driver (myself), started to smell smoke. I then pulled over to further inspect the vehicle at which time, I turned on the overhead lamp in the vehicle since it was starting to get dark, & noticed that the whole front dashboard at this point, was glowing red, orange, & blue & thick black smoke was boiling up on the entire inside windshield & that the truck on the driver's side was fully engulfed in flames behind the dashboard. I immediately got my children (teenagers) out of the truck & leaned over to grab my purse & saw that there was blue flames dripping down from under the dashboard onto the floor where my feet had previously been just seconds before. We all ran as fast & as far as we possibly could away from the vehicle to safety. Within 3 minutes of getting safely out of the truck (by the grace of god), the entire truck was fully engulfed in flames. The trucks windows had at this point, already had started blowing out & shattering & it was shooting huge basketball size fireballs out of the top of the truck into the fields that were beside the road we were on. The local fire department had arrived on the scene at 4 minutes after the truck had caught on fire, & the flames were nearly 30 to 40 feet above the truck. The fire department as well as the fire chief, determined the cause of the fire was due to an electrical failure and/or malfunction within the truck itself. I am just very thankful to the good lord that we all got out safely. If, I had kept driving, the fire department stated that we all could have passed out from smoke inhalation & possibly lost our lives that night. I just wanted others to be aware of this very serious situation. It was Oct. 28, 2011 when this electrical failure issue happened.

car   Electrical Failure problem of Toyota Tacoma

The vehicle is a 2008 Toyota Tacoma. The VIN of the car is 5TEJU62N98_. On 5/2/12 one of the right turn signals stopped working. While inspecting the lights to determine which bulb to replace, I noticed that the plastic lens immediately in front of the turn signal bulbs on both sides in the front is blackened and melting from the heat of the bulb. Additionally, the lens on the passenger side front is cracked on the inside where the bulb has overheated the lens. Further inspection of the lamp socket shows heat fatigue and discoloration due to overheating. It appears as if the light bulb is too close the lens and there is inadequate ventilation for the heat. I am concerned that continual heating of the lens and the socket may lead to an electrical failure of that component, causing a fire. It should be noted that this truck model's running lights (which are also the turn signal lights) are always on whenever the headlights are off, there is no way of shutting these lights off. Fyi: internet searches have turned up numerous complaints regarding this same issue. Many concerned customers have reported the issue to Toyota (myself included), however, Toyota will not fix or even acknowledge that there is an issue. I have taken the liberty of looking at the turn signal lenses of parked Tacoma trucks just to see if they have the same issue as mine. An overwhelming majority of the trucks show the same type of defect. It was Wednesday, May 2, 2012 when this electrical failure issue occurred.

car   Electrical Failure problem of Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen

The car involved is a 2011 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen. At 500 miles exactly, I heard a single click while driving. A quick scan of the instruments showed that the odometer read 500 miles and was not increasing, of course the trip odometer and fuel consumption displays also failed without any input from the odometer. Dealer diagnosed problem and said the instrument cluster needed to be replaced however there were none in stock and Volkswagen of America does not have any replacements. Either. The vehicle runs perfectly so far but reading through other complaints at NHTSA I'm concerned about taking a planned 1200 mile trip not knowing whether a catastrophic electrical failure might leave me stranded. The dealer said Volkswagen has no idea when the units will be available. It could be months and it's not clear if the replacement will solve the problem or how long it will last. This problem occurred on Tuesday, July 5, 2011.

car   Electrical Failure problem of Volvo S60

The vehicle was a 2002 Volvo S60. There were four occupants in the vehicle. As we were driving home from the mall, we noticed a brief interruption in the lights and radio. A few miles down the road, there was an electrical failure and the car shut off in the middle of the road, but we were able to get it cranked back up in less than a minute. We drove approximately two more miles and pulled into our driveway and shut the car off. We heard a sound like an alarm, but it was so faint; before we had time to think about it further, the cab began to fill with blackish grey smoke into the backseat area. We all got out quickly and walked to the back of the car. I noticed flames behind the driver side tail light (where the battery is located) and told my husband. He opened the trunk (burning his fingertips), and flames shot up into the air. I immediately called 911 because the flames were high and fast-moving. The 911 dispatcher instructed us to stay away from the car and not try to put the fire out due to the obvious dangers of a fast-moving car fire. The fire department arrived within five minutes and began putting the fire out; however, the car was a total loss up to the engine, which was not burned. After inspection, the fire department deemed it a loss due to an electrical fire. I have contacted Volvo, but they have not responded to me as of yet. There have been several recalls on this particular vehicle, and we are worried that Volvo may have missed one. For the safety of others, I am reporting this safety hazard. The car remains in our driveway awaiting insurance adjustment; however, I am hopeful that either Volvo or someone who does safety inspections would claim the car to investigate the cause of the fire further. It was Sep. 1, 2012 when this electrical failure issue happened.

car   Electrical Failure problem of BMW 328

The vehicle involved was a 2007 BMW 328i. A blown fuse caused the door unlocking mechanism to fail, trapping occupants in the car. The doors could not be opened by any means, as the failure also disabled the normal mechanism by which pulling on an interior door handle released the associated lock. The sole exception is that the driver's door could be opened by rolling down the window, and reaching out awkwardly through the window to the exterior door handle with the mechanical auxiliary key. However, the only exit available to backseat passengers was through the windows, assuming the passengers were small enough to fit through them. Neither of these modes of egress would be satisfactory if exit needed to be quick. Fortunately, this particular failure happened to my family while the car was safely parked. In the event of a collision or fire that required rapid evacuation of the vehicle, however, this would be a potentially life threatening situation. Ideally, the locks should be mechanically linked to the door handles so that an electrical failure would not render it impossible to open the doors. Absent that, at least having individual fuses for each lock actuator would leave three functioning doors if one failed. It was 07/20/2012 when this electrical failure issue happened.

car   Electrical Failure problem of BMW 128

The car involved is a 2011 BMW 128i us. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was WBAUN1C59B_. The car was purchased 02/27/11. We first noticed the rear window defroster was not working the first weekend of oct. 2011. We took the car to valencia BMW on 10/08/11. The car failed an electrical test and a new top was ordered because the rear window and convertible top are one piece. Car was returned on 10/10/11. The mileage was 10273. On 11/22/11, the top was replaced and car returned on 11/23/11. The mileage was 12168. On 12/01/11, the car was taken to the dealer because the fabric on the new top detached on the freeway on 11/30/11 (terrifying). Repairs were made and car returned same day. I pointed out to the service advisor that the repair was not symmetric to the other side of the top. The repaired side did not tuck up tight to the rear window and my concern was that the top would fly apart again. The mileage was 12495. On 12/20/11, the car was returned to the dealer again and the fabric was secured again and reinstalled. The mileage was 13116. The convertible top was not put down again until may 2012. (all o. K. ) defroster was first used again June 2012 and didn't work again. BMW n. A. Was contacted by email to complain about the safety of the car. On 07/19/12, the car was returned to valencia BMW for additional repairs. The vehicle is in the shop and has been promised tomorrow 07/23/12. The mileage is 21619. After 5 repairs for convertible top and rear window defroster, we have come to the conclusion that our safety may be at risk. The car is still under a factory 50000 mile warranty. Since the number of repairs are excessive, under California law we must now disclose this information when selling the car. The value of the car has now been diminished adversely. It was 06/22/2012 when this electrical failure issue happened.

car   Electrical Failure problem of Cadillac STS

Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is 1G6DC67A57_. I have a 2007 Cadillac Sts - top of the line car. At 800 miles, I had to have a new engine put in the car and now at 4,000 miles, the electrical systems fail, with out any warning. The car's electrical system totally shuts down, the hydraulic sytems fails and the engine is obviously off. There was no indication of any failure or any warning, the car's electrical system simply shuts off - completely. Emergency flashers do not work, there is no access to the trunk for safety material. Therefore, if this occurs on a highway at a reasonable speed, there clearly will be an accident - potential fatal accident by a car simply shutting down, with no indication of same. This problem occurred on December 23, 2007.
