Ignition Switch problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Ignition Switch problems reported in most popular vehicles.
The car was a 2005 Chevrolet Equinox. The ignition switch in this vehicle is defective. The key may be removed from the ignition at any time, even if the car is running. The ignition switch may lock at any time so that the car may not be started. The ignition switch damages the car key causing the cylinder to be filled with metal shavings. This is an ongoing, well known problem. Gm's answer is to clean and lubricate the ignition cylinder. This does not remedy the problem. It was 05/23/14 when this ignition switch issue happened.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2005 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. I have a concern about all the issues with this car. On March 29th my fog lights would not turn off even when ignition switch was turned off. I went on line and saw several "blogs" about this issue - I am an older women with minimal knowledge of these things so I went to a parts store that was open and the clerk pulled the #8 fuse out - for the fog lights so my battery would not run down before service/repair was open on Monday- the mechanic stated he could fix it and also that the dealership just took in a used cruiser and the fog lights did not work - they found that someone had took the fuses out for that cruiser also - is this a defective issue- appears now according to the internet the replacement part has been improved. I also had to replace the entire computer and again seems other cruiser owners have had this issue also - this is a lot of expense and with the loan on the car is difficult to now get a different car as this does seem to be a lemon - but I have to keep it till I can afford to get a different car - with all these issues - no one will want this one either. This problem occurred on 02/11/14.

Then yesterday, the Suburban started and died 3 seconds after starting. I restarted the Suburban and all seemed good. I put the Suburban in drive and rolled at about 5 mph and the truck died. I stopped and put the Suburban in to park and restarted. Placed it into drive and made it home. When I got home, I turned off the Suburban and tried to restart it. It would crank but not fire the engine. The radio and heater and all other electronics would operate as normal, but the dash lights would not turn on I. E. On 3/15/14 my 1999 Acura Tl stalled/engine shut of completely without any warning while driving on the highway at 65 mph. 2nd time it happened, I was driving 40 mph on 3/22/14 & 3rd time it happened I was driving 10 mph on 3/27/14. Each time it happened the engine shut off completely but, the radio and warning light in the dash flashed on and off. I was able to coast to a stop without power steering. After 3-4 attemps to restart the car, I was able to drive off without incident. It happens so random and without warning that I am terrified to drive this car. The car has had a recall of the ignition switch performed in 2003 by the Acura dealer. On 3/24/14 I took the car to the dealer and they have trouble diagnosing the problem. They kept the car for 4 days. They replaced the main fuel relay, performed an engine diagnostic check, performed a recall on the ignition interlock and road tested the car. I picked up the car on 3/27/14 and it stalled later that day as I was driving away from my home. I took the car back to the dealer on 3/28/14 and they still have the car. I want the ntsa to investigate this engine stall issue with the 1999 Acura Tl. I called Acura client relations to report the problem on 3/26/14. I asked them to seriously look into this complaint. I believe ntsa should get involved to get Acura to check/rebuild the faulty ignition switch and conduct a fresh recall. This is a dangerous & serious problem that is similar to the recent gm ignition switch recall. Any vehicle that suddenly and silently shut down while driving instantly and without warning needs ntsa's immediate attention before injurys and deaths occur. I have lost all faith in Acura to successfully repair this ignition switch/stalling issue and call upon ntsa to get involved to investigate this complaint to do what it is supposed to do. . Save lives and prevent injuty. This problem occurred on Sat., Mar. 15, 2014.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2009 Hyundai Sonata. The VIN of this Sonata is 5NPET46CX9_. The incident is similar to NHTSA id# 10508953 which stated there was a grinding noise after starting the car. I experienced the same malfunction but sometimes the grinding doesn't stop until the engine is turned off. It doesn't happen everytime the engine is started but I also had other problems with the ignition switch. A few times the engine started while the key was just turned to the "on" position. After hearing of all the ignition switch problems with gm vehicles, I thought this should be handled by Hyundai as a recall because it is definitely an unsafe situation. I hope the NHTSA will take action on this matter. The vehicle owners should not have to pay for defectively manufactured components no matter how old the vehicle. The failure date was 05/01/2014.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2007 Infiniti Fx35. My 2007 infinity fx-35 steering wheel is stuck in the locked position. Many attempts to get it to unlock has failed. Therefore, I had it towed to the infinity dealership in montgomery, alabama for repairs. I disagree with having to pay over $400 to have what appears to be a factory defect with the ignition switch and steering wheel locking systems. It is my understanding that this is an on-going problem with other infinity fx-35 owners. It was Wednesday, Apr. 17, 2013 when this ignition switch issue occurred.

The car involved was a 2003 Infiniti G35. Vehicle identification number (VIN): JNKCV51E13_. The ac and radio controls basically none of the dashboard controls are working including defroster which is big safety hazard and as per Infiniti dealership its a radio and circuitboard issues. After looking at internet I have found that there was a recall campaign (voluntary service campaign 2003 Infiniti G35 sedan; audio finisher circuit board) for this issues -> itb03-007b service campaign -> issue description listed below available on the internet. But Infiniti dealer is not accepting any recall on this ground and they are asking for 1300+ bucks to fix this issue. Can someone please help as I can live without ac and climate controls but not without defroster. Also its a trouble that ac auto turns on at full blown speed which cause too much cold in winter and its a health risk for myself and family including 2 kids. Description from internet - on some model year 2003 G35 sedans manufactured through August 21, 2002, the audio and temperature controls may not operate as expected. When using the audio equipment or the temperature controls, the unit may become inoperative. In some cases, this can be corrected by turning the ignition switch off and back on again. In other cases, the unit remains inoperative and requires service by an Infiniti technician. To prevent this condition, Infiniti has initiated a voluntary service campaign to replace the audio finisher circuit board on these vehicles. Use Infiniti net to confirm if a specific vehicle is affected by this service campaign (p3104). It was Fri., Jun. 1, 2012 when this ignition switch issue occurred.

The car involved was a 2003 Jeep Wrangler. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 1J4FA49S63_. About 5 years ago I took my Jeep in because when I hit bumps my radio would go off and on, when I would shake the ignition keys the radio goes on and off. Took it to the shop once they said they fixed it, did it again and I took it a second time, they charge me for new ignition switch and said my keys were to heavy causing wear tear. A few days later it was happening again and I gave up with my dealer in chicago 60660. When I heard of the recent recalls I e-mailed my local dealer and told them the issue and that now I can turn off my Jeep take out the keys and radio will not shut off and I fear my my safety of the ignition turning off while I am on the highway, at 70 mph. I was told I could bring it in but not covered in recall. I can not afford to pay more money to Chrysler for this on going issue and will take a chance of possible death should it stall. This problem occurred on May 19, 2014.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2014 Kia Motor Soul. We recently purchased a new 2014 kia sou. I noticed that the ignition switch lock cylinder in the steering column seems very loose. With the key in the cylinder it has too much play. The key wiggles around very loosely. Being concerned that it may cause the ignition switch to turn off while driving, I took it to two different kia dealers' service departments. Both told me it's normal;. I've been driving since 1969 and have never seen an ignition switch have that much play in it. I am concerned that this condition may cause the car to turn itself off while driving and cause an accident. Please investigate this. Thank you. The car involved was a 1999 Lexus Rx300. I own a 1999 Lexus RX-300. The keys are defective, resulting in a dangerous condition. Lexus's dealers and its "roadside assistance" personnel have told me that the keys were originally made with metal that is too brittle. As a result, the keys grind down, and eventually the keys can come out while the car is on, or can come out before the lock is disengaged, making it impossible to start the car. Lexus has issued internal technical bulletins, but has never advised its customer of this problem, which results in a $900 repair problem after about 4 years of use. Keys should last more than 4 years, or Lexus should be forced to advertise that fact to its customres. It was Oct. 20, 2003 when this ignition switch issue occurred.

The car was a 2002 Mazda Tribute. At 50,089 miles, my transmission failed; more specifically, the torque converter malfunctioned resulting in total transmission failure. I have had numerous problems with this vehicle -- I had to replace rotors within the first year of ownership, and may have to do so again at 52,000 miles. The vehicle has trouble starting, the brakes aren't very responsive, and I've had to replace the ignition switch with an unattractive and impractical replacement, because the dealership reported that the type that came with my vehicle wasn't available. The rear window has leaked. Needless to say, the warranty expired just before my transmission failed. This ignition switch problem happened on Jun. 1, 2003.

I brought it up to Mercedes Benz attention and their response was as the part got replaced at this point it is only an "alleged" problem. They do not want to accept their own service mechanic 's description of what happened. I am afraid this car has all the potential of bigger fire hazard and potential for accidents and deaths. I am bringing this to your attention only because you may have prior reports on this make and model and I am doing my civic responsibility it was unfortunate 14 people have to die with gm ignition switch problem. The car is a 2005 Mercedes Benz G500. The vehicle has turned off by itself while driving at various speeds. Engine turns off, all electrical power including power steering and brake assist shuts off - when this happens vehicle becomes very difficult to operate. To regain power, vehicle must be switched to neutral, come to a complete stop, and key needs to be cycled off and back on. Dealer, Mercedes Benz of westminster in colorado has not been able to diagnose the problem with a great degree of certainty, although they think it may be a defective ignition switch. Dealer has contacted mbusa for them to authorize exploratory repairs at no or partial cost to the customer, which mbusa has refused. This is the same ignition switch which was used on 2005-08 mercedes c-class and has caused a myriad of electrical issues as documented by vehicle owners on various forums such as mbworld. Org and benzworld. Org - mercedes has issued a TSB for those vehicles, but not for low production # vehicles such as a G500. The failure date was Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2013.

Happens also if you bump the steering wheel or if you touch the key when it is in the ignition. It has happens while backing out in drive. Stalled the engine twice. Turning the key slightly will put the seat back into the set position. I am only 5' 5", so when the seat goes back while I am driving, I am moved too far away from the steering wheel and the brake and gas pedals. The car involved was a 2002 SAAB 9-5. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was YS3EB49E62_. Ignition switch shut off while on a busy highway twice! once in 2006 and once later another year plus once in a driveway (car purchased used in the fall of 2005). The SAAB switch is located in the center console and if it is hit it switches off and shuts down the car, same as recalled switches in other gm cars. Very dangerous on the highway, but I was lucky and able to steer to the side without a crash. There should have been a lock mechanism to prevent it from happening. It never occurred to me to report it though it is definitely a safety hazard in a what was at the time a gm owned product. I still own the car and drive it daily on the same highway, however am very much aware of the issue. I wasn't aware of what caused the shut down until it happened the second time a few months after the first time. You should include SAAB in the recall of gm products. The vehicle involved is a 2008 Suzuki Xl7. The VIN of this Xl7 is 2S3DB11788_. Many, many gm products are being recalled due to faulty ignition switches, and the Xl7 shares a lot of parts and similarities with the equinox, vue, and so on. Can it be determined if the 2008 Suzuki Xl7 uses the same ignition switch? also, for at least three years, a groaning noise emanates from the steering wheel upon turns. We owned a new 2006 Chevrolet hhr that made a similar sound that the dealer was unable to remedy. The failure date was April 4, 2014.

The vehicle was a 2012 Toyota Highlander. While parked at a curbside, with engine idling, I spontaneously decided to adjust my tilt steering column (up/down) to see if there was a more comfortable position to drive. When I moved the column down for the first time (I had never tried to adjust the position previously, since I bought the car one year earlier), the car's engine immediately shut off. I could not re-start the engine and all I kept thinking was thank-goodness I was not driving, as I had lost engine, steering and braking power. The recent headlines about gm's ignition switch problems and drivers suddenly losing control while driving made me realize that I could have easily been in a similar catastrophic loss of control situation, because of the tilt-steering problem I encountered. I thank the stars that I was not driving or on a highway when this occurred. My car had to be towed to the dealer for repair. Apparently, an ignition switch wire somehow became detached or broken due to my single tilt action. Scary indeed. It was Wed., Jan. 23, 2013 when this ignition switch issue occurred.

The vehicle involved is a 2010 Volkswagen Routan. Sent my 2010 Volkswagen rountan to a detail shop on April 23, 2014 at 930 a. M. In mcallen texas. While being worked on and thereafter completed, the technician had difficulty getting is started in which a hazard warning indicated a "bad key". Technician was able to get it started and we drove our van west approximately 45 miles. Upon arrival at residence noted that ignition stayed stuck in accessory mode and drained my battery. Sent to dealership for diagnostics and repairs, and after six days of research and study, end result is a faulty ignition switch. I did some research and found campaign - recall id # 66665 for my vehicle but only to the manufactured date of July 2010. My vehicle was manufactured August 2010. Looking at that it is only a matter of days of those 12000 vehicles that were called in to repair free of charge, that perhaps my vehicle could be one of hundreds more to come forward with the same complaint? I only thank god that while driving 65 to 70mph that ignition switch did not accidently go into accessory mode from the on position and risk accident thus resulting in injury or death. My VIN# 406558 and mileage is at 56,000. This ignition switch problem happened on Apr. 24, 2014.

The vehicle was a 2007 Volkswagen Passat. Put keyfob in the ignition and it would not start. The lights in the dash illuminated but engine would not turn. Also steering lock warning lock keeps blinking. Car is stuck in park, made several attempts to have it towed, before finally having an experienced tow truck driver drag it on to a flat bed because of car being stuck in park, key fob locked in the ignition switch, has been towed to 3 different shops who have yet to pinpoint the exact problem with the car. One shop claimed it was an electrical problem and that it had something to do with the ignition switch however were unable to fix it. Has spent xxx amount of money having it towed to several shops and still not fixed. Frustrated!!!!!!. It was Friday, January 24, 2014 when this ignition switch issue happened.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2007 Audi A4. I purchased the car in 2013 the key was very difficult to turn in the ignition, after 3 months, it locked up one time in the garage so I just left it as it was and tried the next day. After yanking on the steering wheel and almost breaking the key in the ignition it finally started. A week later I was out shopping and it did the same thing - tow truck driver had no way of even towing the car because the wheels were cocked to the right, key would not come out of the ignition - the steering wheel was totally frozen. A mechanic came and got the wheel to move in turn allowed the car to start I had to leave the car in neutral with the key in it for weeks while we researched this issue. I called the dealer who sold me the car, they told me it was probably the ignition switch needed to be replaced - I asked them why this was not checked before they sold me the car they insisted it did not show up in the diagnostics for a certified preowned Audi I took the car to mechanic. After 7 days tearing the whole steering column out they found the wheel locking mechanism and the key/ignition switch was broken also the airbag light would not go off. After more research the mechanic found reports on the faulty, ignition switch, airbag light and the worst the wheel locking mechanisms which some people had this happen while driving causing accidents. I could not find any recall info and this cost me a lot of money, time and anguish. Audi would not even perform the diagnostic on the car without an up front cost, also the airbag light would not go off after it was taken out and put back in it must be reset with a special Audi tool and they charge for that as well. Seriously I am afraid to drive the car now because if this happens on the highway I could be dead from their lack of concern for safety my Audi is a convertible all wheel drive - should I take out a life insurance policy?. It was 04/09/14 when this ignition switch issue happened.

The car involved is a 1997 Audi A6. Ignition switch stopped working causing the headlights, turn signals, and wipers to stop working. Car still operates and is a danger if driving without turn signals or wipers without knowing. I have noticed this issue has occurred several times with this model and understand the a4 had a recall for this problem the same year. In which the ignition switch has the same part number as the failed switch in the A6 however Audi did not issue a recall for the A6. It was Tue., Sep. 10, 2013 when this ignition switch issue occurred.

The car was a 2001 BMW Z3 coupe. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of this BMW Z3 coupe is WBACK73431_. Dt:consumer says that key seems to stick in the ignition . Consumer had this problem before, but has always been able to jiggle key and get it to come loose. On June 21, 2005 consumer drove to store , when consumer went to shut off vehicle the ignition would not move. Consumer drove home after several attempts to remove key. Consumer did not want to leave vehicle outside of store with engine running. When consumer arrived home he proceeded to move the steering wheel back and forth violently until he finally got ignition to shut off and key to dislodge. Consumer spoke to dealer, and was told that this sometimes happened, but because the warranty expired it was not dealer's responsibility. Dealer said that two cylinders could sometimes lock, causing key to be stuck. Also, dealer said that consumer would have to pay $135 just for dealer to look at problem. It can occur at anytime. Problem happened for about a year. It was June 21, 2005 when this ignition switch issue happened.

The car involved is a 2005 Buick Regal. Crash was involved with this problem. Several times my car has suddenly shut off while driving on roads and even the freeway. The steering wheel locks up and you cannot operate the vehicle. The last time this happened, it caused me to drift across two lanes and onto the shoulder of the road. There were other cars around that had to avoid me. I was driving with my two small children in car seats in the back. We were terrified! we are afraid to get into that car. It's a death trap. I don't have a lot of money. The car is only valued at $3,000, but the repairs are estimated at $1000. The dealership said it was probably the ignition switch that needs to be replaced. There is a gm recall right now for that same problem, but they have not yet included the Buick Regals. The dealership said they were aware of the defects, but could not cover the cost of repairing it, because my car wasn't listed on that recall yet. This ignition switch problem happened on Monday, Apr. 21, 2014.

The car involved was a 2002 Cadillac Seville. While driving the vehicle it would just stop, it wouldn't start while moving. I had to pull over to the side of the road or stop where I was and put the vehicle in park and then it would restart. Only to stop again, every thing went dead, lights, engine, interior gages everything. Lost power steering, power brakes, air bags, everything stopped. This was reported to the Cadillac dealership where I purchased the vehicle new. The problem went on for over a year before they found that the ignition switch (key type) was the problem and once replaced the car has functioned well since. But I found myself only driving on side streets keeping the vehicle at slow speeds and often not driving it for weeks at a time while the dealership worked on the vehicle trying to fix it. This was an intermittent problem that didn't happen all the time but as the months passed it became more frequent until it was every time I drove the car. This issue happened on 12/17/2012.

Due to the recent gm problems with ignition switch I wanted to file this complaint on my 2011 Cadillac Cts as I am not hearing my car mentioned for recall. Twice within the first couple months of owning the Cts I started to accelerate into traffic from a stopped position and the car completely shut off like a light switch flipping. No sound was made but simply everything lost all power and forced me to coast into traffic. . . Twice!! I threw the car into neutral to try and restart it with no luck. It wouldn't even turnover. I had to come to a full stop (coasting to side of road after having traffic fly by me on a 3 lane highway) and then the car would restart like nothing happened. I took the Cts to ken dixon chevy/Cadillac (now waldorf Cadillac) in waldorf, MD and also to capitol Cadillac in greenbelt, MD. The techs told me the car showed no errors on the computer and also they could find no fault on the car and returned it to me. One tech did mention something about a heavy keychain could cause this. I passed him my keys and he said that my keys certainly shouldn't cause that due to the light weight. I am still driving the car and this latest news from gm has me very scared to drive this car in washington, DC traffic and put me and my family at daily risk. I posted this problem on the edmunds. Com Cadillac Cts car forum in March of 2012. No action was taken by gm customer service. This ignition switch issue occurred Friday, Mar. 16, 2012.
