Underhood Wiring problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Underhood Wiring problems reported in most popular vehicles.
The vehicle having this issue was a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. In June 2010 the overhead dvd player quit working and the bose in-dash stereo systems began to intermittently work and not work. In may 2012 the windshield wipers would sometimes not turn on and at times in operation would stop operating mid way. At the same time, the bright lights sometimes would not come on. Moving the steering column up and down would allow the brights to operate, but in most cases they don't work at all. The heat & a/c fan motor only works on high speed as well leaving the other speeds inoperative. It seems there may be an electrical issue in the steering column and I'm not sure if the stereo and dvd player would be somehow connected with that portion of the wiring harness. I contacted Chevrolet and they say there are no open recalls for our VIN number. It was Jun. 12, 2010 when this underhood wiring issue happened.

The vehicle is a 2002 Chevrolet Astro. Recently I took my van to a dealer because the knob on the a/c fan melted off it cost 600 dlrs in repairs the hvac knob had melted off also the connector and resistor had burned out . The entire wiring harness was melted together. No fuse blew to prevent his form happening we are not sure what caused this to occur. My concern is that this could have caused a fire in the dash while I was driving resulting in severe injury accident or even death. Please contact me if there was a recall I missed or if there is any information as to why this happened. Thank you for your time concern chevy owner. The failure date was Thursday, Jul. 5, 2012.

The vehicle is a 2002 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. The VIN of this vehicle is 3C4FY48B32_. 10-18-2011
I just bought my car last month (09-26-2011) and my control arms and bushing have already went bad. Now 2 nights ago (10-16-2011) my headlights stopped working. I took it into the dealership to have everything checked and was told that the wiring under the dash is messed up. I see that there are a lot of recalls for that happening to the 2002 Pt Cruisers and now the dealer I bought the car from will not fix it (even though I'm still within my 30 day warranty) I do not understand why I should have to come out of pocket to fix this problem. Also, the dealer I bought it from would not give me a carfax on the vehicle. Also, sold me the car with a recall already on it that was issued way back in 2004. (power steering pressure hose) that I was told could cause a fire under the hood. It was October 16, 2011 when this underhood wiring issue happened.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2008 Chrysler Voyager. Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is 2A8HR54P38_. I am from ohio. I was on a family vacation with my family of 5 in south carolina. I went to get in my 2008 Chrysler town and country on a Wednesday morning. The automatic door openers would not work with the remote. I started the vehicle and noticed I had no dash instruments. The radio did not work. The windshield wipers were running and would not turn off. The vehicle did drive, although with no dash instruments. I called my dealer in ohio where I leased the vehicle. They advised to call Chrysler corporate. Chrysler corporate gave me names of local dealers near me in south carolina. I drove the vehicle to the dealer on Wednesday at 1pm for my appointment. They advised me through Chrysler coporate's advice that the total integrated power module needed replaced. This part arrived on Thursday. It did not fix the issue. They ordered another part (I do not know what it is) that arrived Friday. This did not fix the issue. They began looking for a short in the vehicle's wiring. As of today, the vehicle is still at the dealer in SC. They do now have the dash lights and instruments working, but cannot get the wipers to stop. I have been without this vehicle for a week and a half. Chrysler did provide a rental to get my family home from vacation on Saturday. I am still in that rental vehicle. It was Mar. 26, 2008 when this underhood wiring issue happened.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2006 Ford Escape. I drove my car around the corner to a friend's house. I started to smell something burning. I pulled into my friend's driveway and stopped, but the car was still running and I saw smoke coming from under the floor area and dash of the car. Smoke filled up the inside of the car. I turned off the car and opened all the doors. Had I not turned it off, it would have caught on fire as it was smoking really bad and extremely hot inside the interior of the cab. The fuse box was blown and all the wiring under the dash was destroyed, so the fire was likely due to an electrical malfunction. The car was able to start but nothing in the dash area was working - the speedometer and gauges will no longer function. I am not driving it due to safety issues and am having it checked by a mechanic. ## VIN passed ## Ford Escape 2006 ##. This underhood wiring problem happened on 07/24/2012.

The car involved is a 2002 Ford Windstar. Brake, abs brake, cruise control, and speedometer/odometer electrical problems
my dash lights are on and off all the time went to 3 mechanic they all checked my brakes, abs and could not find a problem it goes on whenever it wants stays on for weeks then comes back on while driving this has been doing for over a year. I even put stickers over the lights that I can see while driving. I still think there is a electrical wiring problem it is very annoying. I can not afford to get another vehicle . I see there are a lot of complaint about same problem my niece has one does the same thing and my brother in law in west virginia his is doing it too so I really thing Ford needs to check into this before someone's van catches fire or hurt some one. Consumer owns a 2006 GMC Envoy. The contact started the ignition and the fuel gauge displayed an inaccurate reading even though fuel had been dispensed into the fuel tank. While driving, the fuel gauge reading fluctuated which caused difficulty in determining the actual fuel tank level. In addition, the air bag warning indicator illuminated continuously whenever the vehicle was operative. There were also electrical issues which contributed to the radio not to function and the instrument panel cluster lights would not illuminate. The fuel sensor was replaced previously by the dealer and the failure recurred three years later. The vehicle had not been repaired for the most recent fuel gauge malfunction. There were no repairs performed in relation to the other failures. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 23,000. Updated 4/2/12
the consumer stated the fuel level sensor failed twice. Also, ai =r bag warning light was fixed by moving the srs wiring under the driver's sat. The radio and dash lights were replaced as well, due to inferior parts. Updatd 04/16/12. This problem occurred on Aug. 27, 2007.

The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 19UUA66226_. My car (Acura Tl 2006) caught fire on 11/09/2007 at 10:00pm cst while passing by a mcdonalds drive through; at 6233 n broadway, chicago IL. The mcdonalds cashier first noticed the smoke coming out of the hood and pointed it out to me. I pulled the car in the parking lot and tried to put out the fire with my jacket but it only grew bigger. A standing by police officer noticed the incident and pulled me away from the car. 911was called and the fire department arrived in 2 minutes. The car burned during that time. The firemen were able to put out the fire. Acura is refusing to accept this as potential defect in their car. This is clearly an example of a badly manufactured vehicle that jeopardized my life and the life of people around the car. I would like to request that an investigation be initiated and Acura be held responsible for this. It was Nov. 9, 2007 when this underhood wiring issue occurred.

On June 30th, 2005 I purchased a new 2005 Honda Pilot with 65 odometer miles as a personal family vehicle. On December 27, 2006 my 18 year old son was driving the vehicle go shopping in ventura CA. At approximately 11:00 am when he noticed smoke coming from the a/c / heater vents in the dash area. He pulled the vehicle over to investigate. After he pulled over he turned the ignition switch off and realized that smoke was also coming out of the hood and engine compartment. He called 911 to dispatch a fire truck, but before they arrived the vehicle became engulfed in flames and subsequently the engine area and interior were destroyed. The fire crew put out the flames but could not save the vehicle. It was considered a total loss. It is my opinion that the vehicle manufacturer should be responsible for my damages because I have not altered the vehicle's configuration in any manner and something mechanically wrong with the vehicle caused the fire. I would appreciate any assistance you can lend me to resolve this situation. It was 12/27/06 when this underhood wiring issue happened.

The car is a 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 5NMSG13D07_. I received a recall letter from Hyundai concerning the airbags in the vehicle. I realized that my airbag light on my dash had been on for a long time, perhaps a year or two, but I thought that was normal and didn't realize it meant it didn't work. I brought my vehicle to the dealer and they performed the repair related to the recall. The dealer stated that the repair did not fix the problem as the airbag light was still on. I agreed to pay the diagnostic charge so the dealer could find the problem. The dealer says there is a short in the wiring harness that is the cause of the problem which would cost $1500 to fix. They said the srs computer and airbag sensor may also need to be replaced for a cost of $600 and $400 respectively. This issue happened on Tue., Feb. 1, 2011.

The vehicle involved is a 1996 Jeep Cherokee. The VIN of this Cherokee is 1J4FJ28S9T_. With time the blower motor wiring harness (which is too small for the amperage) in these vehicles invariably heats up and melts or burns. The melting of the harness and connector behind the blower speed selector switch in the dash and the burning of the switch itself occured in my vehicle, allong with the failure of the blower motor resistor, but in many vehicles the resistor is the first to burn and fail. I have looked at over 20 of these vehicles ranging from 1991 to 1996, and 30000 to 220000 miles, and every single one one them had these components melted and burned to the point of not being usable, and making one wonder how many other vehicles have caught fire and burned because of this fault. Some of these vehicles also showed associated wires burned or melted in the steering column. An associated symptom is that the blower motor ceases to function, or (in the case of resistor failure, will usually work only on high speed). This shows a defect that may take time to manifest, but will always occur eventually in every vehicle unless the blower is never used. The blower switch to resistor wiring harness and switch connector/plug are not even available from dealers, but the switch itself and the resistor are available as aftermarket items. However, if replaced, these will fail too, unless the wiring in this circuit is replaced with heavier guage wiring or somehow protected from high amperage. As evidenced by hundreds of related complaints on internet forums, this is a serious problem that could result in fires, and potentially loss of life. Luckily my fire was minor, did little damage and was quickly extinguished. However, I'm not sure how to resolve the actual problem properly, since oem replacement parts will sooner or later develop the same problems, and available aftermarket parts are not improved over the originals. This problem occurred on 02/15/2012.

The car is a 2001 Lincoln Town Car. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) was 1LNHM83WX1_. Last wed. , Nov. 8th. , 2006 my Lincoln towncar cartier died. When the tow truck came, he popped open the hood and noticed that a fuse had popped up. He pushed it down and the car strted. That same afternoon, it happened again, and I was able to fix it the same way. I had the car checked for electrical defects, as well as fuse problems and there were none. Lithia in reno said that the terminals were loose under the fuse box, requiring a new one total cost: $1900. 00 I am very distressed about this. This is a luxury car and it shouldn't be happening. I am afraid it will happen again. I feel that it is a manufacturer's defect and they should pay the expense. I have already spent over $100. Of my own money. The car was a 2000 Mercedes Benz Slk230. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of this Mercedes Benz Slk230 is WDBKK47F4Y_. I have a 2000 mercedes Slk230 sport, copper designo edition. I have had many electrical problems with this car in the year I have had it. The back brake light was melted and burned a couple of months ago and I received a recall letter from that. I had the car running for about 1 min. And 30 seconds down the road when I began to smell something that smelled like plastic burning, I thought for sure it couldn't be my car and was coming from outside. I had the heat on notch number 2 but nothing was coming out. All of a sudden the heat came on then just cut off again, I thought that was odd. The smell began to get worse. So I proceeded to pull into a convenient store parking lot. As I pulled in I noticed smoke spiraling out of the windshield vents, so now I am concerned because smoke is filling up the cabin. I immediately shut the car off and popped the hood. Smoke was pouring out from just underneath the windshield, I had no idea what was happening. I ran inside the store to get possibly some water or such for the car. I looked out the window of the store and my car had 6 foot flames rushing out the front right under the windshield. The store manager and I ran out and put the fire out with a fire extinguisher, and the fire dept. Came and new york state police. The fireman drenched it with water and pretty much flooded the inside of the car. The hole behind the fire wall was quite big with the wire harness being burnt to a crisp. The fireman said it looked like the heater blower had a short the way it was all melted. I have heard tons of complaints on this car about electrical shorts, a few complaints even was what happened to my car, but they pulled the heater fuse just in time to prevent fire. What if a parent left an infant in there for a minute while they ran in to pay for something , next thing you know the passengers seat is in flames, I bet someone would do something about this then!! thank you, josh. The failure date was May. 4, 2007.

Constant clicking noises coming from the far left drivers side of dash. We noticed a flame coming out of my left front top dash vent after car had been parked for 5+ hours. It's obvious the fire started in the dash and it burnt both of the wiring harnesses under the left front control panel hitting the vent line and coming out the top vent of the drivers side of the dash. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is YS3CH68M4T_. The car had a crash. 1996 SAAB 9000 aero rear-ended an izuzu rodeo. Damage to the rodeo was almost unnoticeable. SAAB engine however erupted into flames and was a total loss. A factory certified technician less than 30 days prior to fire had serviced SAAB. Response from SAAB customer service - the issue did not concern SAAB and was between my insurance company and me. Was told by SAAB that insurance company would subrogate the claim if they thought it was worthwhile. Insurance company (metlife) commented that loss was not large enough to pursue subrogation. Observed no concern that a problem could exist and ran into complete denial of any responsibility. Concern is how and why it could have happened and under similar circumstances will others be in danger of a like hazard. Incident is well document via digital photographs along with extensive detail from conversations with SAAB. The failure date was 01/05/04.

The car involved is a 1999 SAAB 900. Engine shut off while car was running three times. First two times car was idling, third time car was being driven at 60 mph. Engine shut off with no warning and would not restart. SAAB dealer claimed in the first two instances that this could not possibly happen with car running. In first instance, dealer replaced ignition switch. In second instance, dealer replaced gear position switch. In third instance, dealer replaced chafed wiring harness to passenger seat. We are not convinced that SAAB has fixed this major safety problem, and are even more worried that a chafed wire for the heated seat can cause an immediate engine shutdown on any SAAB 9-3. The vehicle having this issue was a 2007 Saturn Vue. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 5GZCZ33Z37_. Hello, I am writing concerning issues with my brand new Saturn green-line hybrid Vue. I purchased it about 2 months ago, and there have been some frightening issues. This is a serious issue about the voluntary recall of the green-line hybrid Vue- the fix does not work. It has put our family in harm's way. I received a voluntary recall notice to fix the electric harness wiring on my hybrid, to prevent problems. Well, I took it in today, and not less than 1 minute after I left the dealership the engine light came on (first time ever). Then about 8 minutes later, all hell broke loose in the car. . . All electronics failed- radio lights, dash lights, headlights, engine wouldn't change gears, lights were flashing on and off, speedometer didn't work, then they were all flickering, then the headlights went out, onstar died, radio died, power steering died! me and my family were in the car and almost died in a head on collision because I couldn't barely steer the car!!
well, from taking my new car in to prevent a problem, to the Saturn team almost killing us, I am far from happy. Please let whoever needs to know this, know immediately. If we had gotten on the highway as planned, we most likely wouldn't be talking because we would have lost control on the highway. This issue happened on Sep. 7, 2007.

The car is a 2012 Toyota Rav4. The car was parked in the driveway with the doors locked and the windows rolled up. Sometime between 10pm and 5:30am there was a fire that created enough heat to melt the coating on the front windshield and blow out the front windshield, melt the center of the dash and the area between the visors where the controls for the sunroof and interior lights were. It also caused a short in the wiring that resulted in turning on the headlights even though the switch was off. We had to disconnect the car battery to turn off the lights. Toyota did an investigation and decided that the aurora be any baby on the dash spontaneously combusted in the middle of the night causing the fire and damage. Since there have been reports of other Toyotas having problems with electrical I thought you would want to know about this case. It was Friday, May 11, 2012 when this underhood wiring issue occurred.

The car is a 1998 Volkswagen Beetle. The vehicle air conditioning stopped working in 9/2010. After paying for repair of the ac system it still did not work and the mechanic stated that the problem was in the wiring and would have to be repaired by the dealer. Recently, 4/2012, the gas pedal has started to fluctuate on its own while driving the vehicle. When this happens the car must be pulled over and turned off for to reset the electrical system and then started again to control the problem. However the problem continues to occur at frequent intervals. I contacted vw after reading about the recalls concerning electrical wiring caused by a wire connection too close to the battery tray (recall id # 11675 - electrical system:wiring:front underhood)
they told me the VIN number of the vehicle was not eligible for the recall even though the recall was in the same 1998 model year. I told them we are having the exact same problems as stated in the recall. The car is now unsafe to drive and we are left to diy on this one. Is there any resoltion that can be achieved here? it seems it should absolutely be recalled/repaired by vw. The failure date was Wednesday, September 1, 2010.

We pulled over immediately, and there was smoke under the dashboard. We got out. Within five minutes the car was totally engulfed in flames, despite attempts to put it out with fire extinguishers. I was driving my 2003 Audi A6 3. 0 quattro on Thursday 04/03/2008 around 10:30pm. I was traveling 25mph on sylvan avenue in englewood cliffs, NJ the check engine light illuminated on my dash board and started flashing, I immediately pulled over to the side of the road to diagnose the problem, when I pulled over I saw smoke coming out from under the hood of my car. I immediately turned of the vehicle and popped the hood to see what was going on. . . I popped the hood to find the ignition coil on the third cylinder (back left cylinder) had started on fire with about 12inches of flames. Thank god this all happened I about 30 seconds and I was able to get the fire out, otherwise the whole car would have burned to the ground. If I was stuck in traffic or on the highway this car would have most definitely burned to the ground. I feel very lucky my two year old daughter was not in the car with me. Nevertheless, the ignition coil is completely melted as well as the wiring harness. I always have done all the manufacturer recommendations on the vehicle and the car was just at the dealer service center on 04/01/2008 for maintenance, I had them look over the whole car and they said everything was fine. After speaking to service technicians at Audi I have found this to be a commonly recurring problem with their ignition coils, specifically pertaining to the third cylinder, they claim it overheats because the design is to close to the catalytic converter. All I know is something should be done, I have pictures of the damage where you can clearly see some type of electrical malfunction that I would be more then willing to share. Please someone do something before a life is lost from this manufacturer error. !!!. The failure date was Thursday, Apr. 3, 2008.

The vehicle is a 2002 Audi A6. Driving from NJ to upstate NY for ski trip to hunter mountain. Heavy rain during drive up on Friday evening, rain all day Saturday. Got in the car to go skiing on Sunday morning and noticed several inches of water in rear passenger footwell. I was able to bale out some of the water but interior carpeting was soaked. While going to hunter, water was sloshing between passenger footwell and rear. After dropping off the skiers I decided to head home on the NY state thruway. After approx 50 miles - digital dash display disappeared, car started to jerk around and buck. Speed was dropped down to 20 mph, I was able to make it to a rest stop. Anyway - remainder of ski party picked me up and I had the car towed back to NJ - $700. Mechanic states that tcu unit was under water. Rain water apparently came in through the pollen filter housing and flooded the car. Total damage to the car $2300. There are a number of complaints throughout the internet and various forums detailing this exact problem. I believe this is a design flaw and Audi should be held responsible for this problem. I'd like to get reimbursed for my cost. Individuals with this problem should contact Audi customer service at 800-822-2834. It was Fri., Mar. 7, 2008 when this underhood wiring issue occurred.

The vehicle involved was a 2006 Buick Rendezvous. I plugged my cell phone into the car charger in the front console. When I returned to the car after about 15 minutes, it was filled with smoke that was coming out of the car charger. I immediately unplugged the charger. I tried to start the car and it was completely dead. After examining the fuses, I noticed that the one for the charger as well as the one for the interior lights was completely melted. After further research it was discovered that the wiring harness under the dash was completely melted - had I not gone out when I did, the car probably would have caught fire. This should never have happened - there should be safety features int he vehicle to cut the power to the charger immediately if there is a short. It was towed to the dealer last night. They are claiming this is not covered by warranty though this is obviously a problem with the Rendezvous. Besides this - the check engine light has been on twice, the transmission is about to go, the alarm system never worked as well as the remote start. They sold me a vehicle with known issues and don't want to stand behind it. I don't think I will ever buy a Buick again. The failure date was Jul. 17, 2012.

The vehicle having this issue was a 1996 Buick Roadmaster. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 1G4BR82P6T_. When ignition key is in "run" position, "arcing" as evidenced by intense static on the am radio, is taking place. When key is in "accessory" position, no static is present and am radio functions normally. Made three attempts to have original dealer diagnose problem. Refused to even investigate. Took vehicle to present owner, whose service advisor, when presented with problem by actually listening to the static, admitted that, "that should not happen. " dealer replaced radio. Obviously, no change. Radio is not the problem, just the "messenger" and is providing the evidence of a potential fire hazard. Service manager refused to investigate further. Contacted Buick (file 9901-07-953). They also refused to intervene. I have attempted to isolate problem by disconnecting individual power to blower, fuel pump, etc. , to no avail. I am concerned that, eventually, whatever is arcing will cause enough heat to start a fire. Can you help?. The failure date was 03/21/97.

The vehicle involved was a 2002 Jaguar X-type. My fiancee was driving when the engine lost all power, the red malfunction light came on, then the amber service light. The vehicle wouldn't accelerate at all and was a hazard to attempt to pull off the road from the right lane! my fiancee called scared to death as she was almost rear ended due to the sudden power loss. Being a 3x re-certified a. S. E. Master technician with numerous college credits in electrical engineering through the us air force, I told her to shut the vehicle off and attempt to restart the engine to check the dash warning lights, both returned and the vehicle failed to accelerate beyond idle. As the lead tech(shop foreman) of the local Mitsubishi dealer, I was in charge of lemon law repairs prior to buy back from the manufacturer in se fla. I hooked up my diagnostic scan tool to retrieve codes from the obd2 connection and pulled up a code for the throttle position sensor. Fortunately I was able to clear the code and drive the vehicle home- cautiously! as the lead tech. At a boca raton,FL. Repair center, I called my local Jaguar dealer to inquire about the price and availability of the tps sensor and was notified that the part was only available as a throttle body assembly- for the amount of @1500. 00 dollars and they happened to stock 2 units. I notified Jaguar customer service and was told to take the car to the dealer though the vehicle was just over the mileage warranty and the lights were no longer on, before any determination could be made as to the warranty goodwill available to help with the repair. My previously mentioned credentials and the repeated mention that my family drives in the vehicle with 3 children and my concern with their safety fell on deaf ears. My concern is that there is no redundant circuit to allow safe travel to a clear road shoulder in the event of sensor failure as this vehicle drives by wires for the throttle. Please respond ASAP as I fear a repeat is definately likely!. This underhood wiring problem happened on March 13, 2006.
