Interior Rearview Mirror problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Interior Rearview Mirror problems reported in most popular vehicles.
The car is a 2011 Chevrolet Impala. My complaint with this vehicle is visibility caused by the read headrests when using the rear view mirror. Gm built the back seat with 3 large headrests "which cannot be removed" that blocks almost the entire rear window. When driving the car, the most I can see in the rear view mirror is the tops of the car(s) behind me, sometimes not that much. When backing up, you have to look around all three back headrests in order not to hit someone or something. These back seat headrests can be replaced by buying the 2012 Impala headrest components from gm which cost at least $400. 00 just for the 3 parts needed. I feel like gm should be required to replace the back seat headrests due to the hazard posed by the headrests. The failure date was January 28, 2011.

Vehicle identification number (VIN): 2B3CJ5DT9A_. I have a 2010 Dodge Challenger. On 8-3-2011 I went out to go to lunch and noticed my rearview mirror had fallen off. The problem is that it took a plug of windshield with it when it fell. It appears that the windshield could be defective. I'm afraid the whole windshield may just shatter. I have been waiting 2 weeks for an expedited answer from Chrysler. At this time they have not bothered to give me an answer. The dealership took pictures and sent them to chrsler for a determination. It's starting to look like I'm getting the run around. The failure date was August 3, 2011.

The car involved is a 2001 Dodge Stratus coupe. Light in rearvirew mirror stopped working. Next day, while car was parked in a garage, the interior components of rearview mirror heated up to such an extreme temperature that the plastic casing actually melted and dripped onto the console below, melting that as well. When I returned to my vehicle it reeked of a burnt smell and was hazy on the interior. The mirror no longer dims and seems to have melted also, as the mirror now looks as if I were looking through ice. I am now weary about driving the vehicle because I am afraid it could catch fire. This problem occurred on Thu., Jul. 19, 2007.

The car was a 1999 Jeep Laredo. Erratic, intermittent instrumentation failures over the past three years starting with the airbag light going on and off, a malfunctioning odometer and culminating in the recent failure of the speedometer. I suspect this is caused by a defective electrical connector as noted in company service bulletin #081599. I have not been able to obtain this info from either Chrysler or the Jeep dealership. Clearly this is a defective part and should be recalled by Chrysler as it is a safety hazard. Please refer to NHTSA complaints # 10025741, 896900, 723322, 10026823. . . In addition, my front passenger window crashed inside the door while driving. This was due to the plastic clip breaking in the window regulator that has since been redesigned. I have already had to replace the driver side window at the cost of several hundred dollars about a year ago for the exact same problem. Clearly this is a defective part and is not due to "normal wear and tear" and should be recalled by Chrysler as it is a safety hazard. In addition, my interior rear view mirror fell off my windshield into my lap while driving on the expressway in 2000. Was told the glue lost adhesion due to exposure to direct sunlight. It was fixed by dealer after I purchased a "mirror repair kit". Clearly this is bad design and an enormous safety hazard. I am presently driving my Jeep in a downtown metro area with three windows and a non- working speedometer until I can afford to get problems repaired. It was Sep. 16, 2005 when this interior rearview mirror issue occurred.

The vehicle was a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The event occurred as I was backing out of my driveway. My rear view mirror was out of view and I went to adjust it. I remembered the window motor on the drivers side had a short so I went to adjust it manually. As I put slight pressure on the mirror the whole thing folded back. I figured it was okay seeing as they were designed to fold back, but when I put them back in place, they did not stay. Now, as I drive down the road, the mirrors fold themselves in without warning and it is making me very worried that I cannot see out of my mirror. The failure date was Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009.

Vehicle identification number (VIN): SALPV1245W_. I own a 1998 Land Rover Range Rover and the self dimming rear view mirror is faulty. There is a strong ring or halo developing on the glass that is making it near impossible to see through. I believe the problem is due to the auto dim feature that heats up the special glass to auto dim. Anyway, I contacted the manufacturer at 1-800-637-6837 opt 9 ext 2949 and talked with a heather. (the conversation was supposedly recorded). She told me that Land Rover doesn't see why they would be responsible for this and that they wont do anything about this because "the vehicle is out of warranty". This is a common occurrence in this make of vehicle and I think this is an accident waiting to happen. Land rover makes the replacement so expensive, that an obvious solution is too costly for the average driver. This issue happened on 11/10/2004.

Visibility:rearview mirrors/devices:interior I currently own a 2006 Lexus Is250. About a year ago, I noticed several splotches on the rearview mirror. Initially there were only a few, but the splotches increased to the point that it is now impossible to use the rearview mirror which interferes with rear visibility and normal driving conditions. This situation can increase the possibility of an accident since it becomes impossible to see anything thru the rearview mirror. The vehicle was taken to the only Lexus authorized dealer in puerto rico and I was informed that I had to pay for all charges since the vehicle was already out of warranty. This is a potential safety issue which should be covered by Lexus, regardless if the vehicle is on warranty or not. This interior rearview mirror issue occurred Tuesday, July 24, 2012.

Additionally, the bottom 3/4ths is so dark it is almost impossible to see vehicles approaching unless their lights are on. A person standing behind the vehicle could not be seen at dusk. Vehicle identification number (VIN) of the vehicle is 4T1BK1EB5D_. In the 2013 Toyota Avalon, driver visibility is dangerously distorted when looking through the rear view mirror at approaching cars (especially at night), due to a defect in the new 2013 engineering design of the rear glass material, rear glass contour and angle, tinting, and defrost strips. All lights (especially vehicle headlights, street lights, traffic lights, etc. ) observed through the rear glass have long, bright, vertical lines radiating at the top and bottom from the main light source viewed through the rear view mirror. These vertical lines shining from all of the numerous light sources obscure the rear view vision, causing confusion for the driver in many ways: 1) not being able to correctly judge rear car distance, 2) not being able to identify the types of vehicles in the rear, 3) not being able to change lanes safely because of distortions through the rear glass panel, 4) not being able to judge how many vehicles are approaching and/or passing, and last but not least, 5) causing the driver to stare longer through the rear view mirror in an attempt to discern what is taking place behind which takes the driver's eye off of the front vision for too long. Although the bright vertical lines can be seen more distinctly at dusk and night, they are also observable during the daytime if the vehicles coming from behind have front lights on, and/or the sun shines on the chrome. These radiating vertical lines take on the color of the main light source seen from behind so the driver may observe white, yellow, red, green, etc. Colors. This causes confusion when trying to judge what is happening with approaching vehicles from behind. On a multi-lane highway at night, these many-colored vertical lines radiating up and down from the various types of headlights, street lights, etc. Cause a confusing and dangerous situation for the driver. It was 03/01/2013 when this interior rearview mirror issue happened.

According to a web search of Volvo forum websites, this appears to be a common problem not just common to my particular model and year of Volvo. This interior rearview mirror issue occurred 07/20/10.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2012 Audi Q5. The rear view mirror height is stationary and not adjustable. For many(?) persons, when looking and or turning to the right approximately 1/3 of the field of vision is blocked, making it difficult to see the road, possible pedestrians, objects, vehicles etc. Also, the position of the cruise control switch behind the lower left of the steering wheel makes operation difficult, possibly causing distracted driving, since it has to be operated while the vehicle is in motion. This problem occurred on Friday, Jan. 13, 2012.

The vehicle was a 2009 Audi A4. "an accident waiting to happen. " the outside rearview mirrors block the driver view to the extent that an entire car is many times completely hidden from the drivers' view. They are placed poorly and maybe are too large. Maybve if they were lower, or smaller or the drivers seat higher. I am a female of average height and have had a few close calls. I now must rise myself up to see over or around the mirror which is difficult when driving. This problem occurred on Thursday, July 7, 2011.

The vehicle is a 2004 BMW 325i. I've noticed some dark to light brown smears or squiggly lines on my rearview mirror. I tried to clean it when I realized that the fault is actually a problem with the mirror. I called the dealer and because the car isn't under warranty it isn't covered yet the part can cost up to $700. 00 without labor. The dealer told me that this is a known issue with the auto dimming fluid leaking/failing in the mirror. I called BMW USA and they currently have no plans to recall the part. I'm dismayed because I have a chevy truck with an auto-dimming mirror that is much older than the car that doesn't have this issue. This seems like a safety hazard to me as the ability to see with the rearview mirror is definitely an issue. I've read on forums that other people with the same model and year are having the same issue only theirs is worse because the fluid has leaked out of the mirror and proceeded to eat through any part of the interior that it drips on. Doesn't that make this a potential health hazard as well since the auto dimming fluid is obviously some type of acid which could also cause a fire if it hits any wiring? I hope that someone looks into this as I've gotten no where with BMW. Thanks!. This interior rearview mirror problem happened on Thu., Jul. 7, 2011.

Just bought a 2007 Buick Rendezvous. O/s mirrors are so large they obstruct view of people, approaching cars, etc. Passenger seat air bag info should not be on rear view mirror. It is too distracting. Also, window in rear door isn't low enough. When you look out the rear view mirror you don't get a full view of what's behind you. You see part of the door. It was 07/30/07 when this interior rearview mirror issue occurred.

The vehicle involved was a 2001 Jaguar Xjs. Interior rear view mirror is mounted too low. It blocks view to right of center, and it is not adjustable for location up/down or left/right. It is mounted by a single spherical joint which allows angular adjustment but no location adjustment. I am only 5'-10" tall; with seat motored to its lower limit mirror blocks view through windshield. Curiously, Jaguar mounts mirrors in s type cars which do not have rain sensing wipers by a bracket containing two spherical joints--separated by an "intermediate link. " for cars with rain sensing wipers Jaguar eliminates the intermediate link (and one of the ball joints) forcing the driver to accept the mirror location as built. No location adjustment is possible--only angular adjustment. Question is "why is the intermediate link necessary with some s type cars and eliminated with other s type cars? three times I have moved from stop signs into the path of other drivers because they were hidden by my mirror. Fortunately for me all of them were alert enough to avoid a collision. My concern for safety is so intense that now I drive in a contorted position--head tilted to peek under the mirror. After a period that posture becomes painful, but driving without visual contact with the right front corner of my surroundings is worse. Jaguar dealer has been asked to resolve problem, as has Jaguar rep in new jersey. Reply is that the car performs as it was designed, therefore nothing can be done to eliminate the problem. My complaint is not the only one. Others have talked about the non-adjustable, low mirror mounting problem on jagtalk. Com. I consider this to be a safety issue, and request NHTSA's involvement. Thank you, phil nuccio.
