car   Defogger problem of GMC Sierra 1500

The windshield and the side windows of my new 2010 GMC Sierra 1500 wt, have an extreme tendency to fog over in temperatures near the freezing point. I have read, and observed, that the ac compressor becomes automatically disabled when the outside temperature gets near the freeze zone (I think the actual threshold is somewhere around 40 degrees f). With the ac disabled, the defrost mode cannot keep the windows clear. The problem is magnified when there are two or three individuals in the cab. At that point, it is exceedingly difficult to clear the side windows, even to the point that frost forms on the inside window surface! very recently, while traveling to work during my 40 mile commute, I was running the ac, with the temp control set to a comfortable level and the blower about the medium setting and flowing through the main vents. The outside temperature was, apparently, hovering near the point where the electronics disable the compressor. The windshield and both side windows fogged over suddenly. I noticed the ac light was out, so I switched to defrost mode and hi blower. The windshield did clear in about a minute or two, but all of that happened while driving down the turnpike at 70 mph. This seems to be a significant safety concern. . . . At least for me and my family. If the ac compressor had stayed enabled, this would never have happened. It is very difficult to stop condensation buildup if you cannot run the ac to dry the cabin air. This design configuration seems to present an issue of safety. I am not sure if it is just this particular model. I suspect so, since it is the base model truck. We have a 2011 GMC terrain, which does not present this issue. I have contacted the dealer about this issue now for 3 years with no resolution. They act as though you are an idiot. This defogger problem happened on Nov. 30, 2010.

car   Defogger problem of Jeep Grand Cherokee

The vehicle was a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have owned our 1999 Grand Cherokee since 1999 - its been a great car but every single issue listed on this website has befallen us. Currently @ 149k miles we have no heat on the driver side due to blend door assembly, the airbag light goes off all the time and there is no heat in the drivers side seat. I am shocked that so many people have the exact same issues and that to me says there is truly something wrong. We also took part in a class action suit that covered some of the expenses we had in continually replacing the brakes - especially the rotors which warp with out notice and can do that if you just step on the brakes to hard! even if you have just had them replaced. Cheap parts? I am a die hard Jeep owner but after reading all of these postings I am wondering if my alliance should be elsewhere?. The failure date was Saturday, October 1, 2011.

car   Defogger problem of Nissan Versa

The vehicle having this issue was a 2007 Nissan Versa. When the problem initially happened, I would have to push the rear defroster button hard (and sometimes wiggle it) in order to make it work. However, after a week of doing that to get the snow, frost, and fog off my rear windshield, the button no longer works (I. E. The light indicator does not come on, nor does the rear defroster turn on). After checking all my fuses (in the hood and cabin) and finding that the fuses were in perfect working order, I began to look on various Nissan Versa forum sights to see if I could troubleshoot the matter. After typing my problem in, numerous Nissan forums popped up discussing this exact problem. Many people have stated that the reason the rear defroster does not work is due to an inferior a/c controller. I understand that times are tough and companies want to make money by using cheap parts, however when it comes to safety this should not be the issue. We took the vehicle to a vw mechanic oasis auto center in redding, CA. He said he cleared the coil but that a valve may also be part of the problem. This occurred in November 2011. Since we live in n. California it has not been a big issue since it is warm most of the year. I did however see this is a recall item. Please advise me if we can still get this repaired under the recall. This problem occurred on Monday, January 14, 2013.

car   Defogger problem of Audi A4

The car was a 1999 Audi A4. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of this Audi A4 is WAUED28D7X_. Problem: when temperature falls below 38 f, recirculation button never works. Being in boston that covers most of the winter. The only way not to breathe the fumes is to turn the ventilation off completely. This then shuts the heat as well. My new commute takes me daily through the calahan tunnel. If outside is 13 f, and I am stuck in traffic in the tunnel for an hour, these are my options: keep the heat running until poisoned by gas fumes (garage analogy), or shut off heat until frostbitten at 13 f. Can this be considered a safety violation? attempted resolution: Audi of America's response was that a/c has to be turned on for recirculation button to be operational. Since a/c does not work below 38 f (they cited some federal regulation) so the recirculation button does not as well. The device works as designed, according to Audi. My dealer, tom walton of park Porsche Audi, told me confidentially that they have customers who did not want to purchase Audi A4 until these problems were solved. I filed a report with Audio of America twice. There was no follow up either time. Meanwhile dealers service department informed me that they inquired about this before and were told that device operates as designed. The same year I rented exactly the same vehicle in germany and noticed that there was a different a/c assembly installed, and that recirculation button worked well in temperatures below 20 f. In u. S. , the same a/c assembly became available with the 2000 model year, where this problem is not present. I asked the dealer if I could pay to have that a/c assembly installed but was told that that was not possible. When surfing on the web, I discovered a similar problem reported by another owner with the same vehicle, but only this time the 1997 model year. So it appears that for sure 1997-1999 model year A4's have a faulty a/c assembly. This defogger issue occurred Jan. 1, 1999.. Read more...

car   Defogger problem of BMW 525

The vehicle was a 1994 BMW 525ia. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is WBAHD6322R_. Vehicle in motion with defrost on, smoke came from defrost vent on dashboard, filling car instantly with smoke. Pulled off highway, opened windows, smoke clears then moved car approximately 200ft. Off main route to side street. Smoke and flames immediately came out of the defrost vent. Used 3 abc fire extinguishers, failing to contain the fire before the fire department arrived with 2 pumpers, and had to use afff foam to manage the fire due to high amounts of magnesium in the car. The newly purchased car was in very good condition, the car and contents are a total loss. Researched on line, found multiple reports of the same exact issue in this model, this was not unique. Also was not able to find any reports of recall for this defect. Also, will be contacting BMW of north America today. Updated 12/06/lj. This issue happened on Thursday, November 15, 2012.

car   Defogger problem of BMW X5

The vehicle involved is a 2003 BMW X5. I was driving to work when I got a foul burning smell in the car. I had the heat and defoggers cranking so I lowered the fan speed thinking it was coming in from outside when I noticed smoke forming on the floor of by the passenger seat. At that time I came to a stop light and the car shut off. I was on a busy road and it was very cold out. I tried to crank it and nothing. The second attempt sounded as if someone threw something into a fan. I was towed and advised by the mechanic that the oil separator went causing the spark plugs to fill with oil causing the motor to shut down. BMW advised the mechanic that this is a recurring problem and they have a kit to upgrade the whole mechanism. I was reading edmund blogs and a number of people have had this problem costing anywhere from $1300 - $6000 depending on the damage. I had missed work the day before due to a snow storm. I could have been in a serious accident if I had been caught in bad weather or on the highway which I take to work. This is going to be an expensive fix and BMW is aware of the problem. Why isn't it a recall? what has to happen before it is? what are my options in trying to recover my expenses. The car has all of 51000 miles on it. This problem occurred on Mar. 3, 2009.

car   Defogger problem of Buick Lucerne

The vehicle having this issue was a 2008 Buick Lucerne. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was 1G4HE57Y08_. I understand there is a recall to disable and remove the heated windshield solution from the car. This is a feature that cost extra when buying the car and I feel you should repair it, not just remove the feature. Is there any repair instead of removal? if not how do you compensate owners for the loss of functionality of the heated windshield system. I live in the northeast and use it occasionally in the winter. It was Monday, March 12, 2012 when this defogger issue occurred.

car   Defogger problem of Cadillac Escalade

The car involved is a 2007 Cadillac Escalade. Heated front seats not working. The problem with this, is that the connector that attaches to the climate control seat module (ccsm) (which is located under the front passenger seat), overheats to the point that the connector has melted. I believe that this is a fire hazard and Cadillac should look into fixing it. From all the posts on this subject in the Cadillac owner's forums there are alot of owners having the same problem and concerns. The failure date was Friday, Dec. 20, 2013.
