Owners manual states to insert key to unlock. I feel that correct parts were not supplied during build process and this is major safety issue when no interior manual release installed. Other vehicles have manual trunk release and feel this should be recalled by gm and corrected. Also the part is dealer item only so repair is significantly higher. car   Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of Dodge Nitro

The vehicle identification number (VIN) is 1D8GU58K37_. While unloading groceries from the rear cargo area of my 2007 Dodge Nitro, the rear tail-gate (aka "liftgate") , failed to stay in the up/open position and came down at such a rapid speed that the heavy liftgate could have caused serious if not fatal injuries to any small child or adult in the area of the liftgate via trauma sustained to the head, neck, back, or extremities. The vehicle was parked in our garage on level concrete, with no wind/weather involved when this malfunction with the liftgate lifters (2) occurred. The liftgate lifters (2) have not held up the rear liftgate since this incident occurred. I called the dealership for replacement of both lifters. I called the manufacturer of the lifters and they have not returned my phone call. The manufacturer of the lifters is "stabilus, gastonia, n. C. 28052. car   Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of Ford Explorer

This happened to our 2006 Ford Explorer (eddie bauer edition, v8 4wd). The rear liftgate glass exploded into a million tiny pieces with no evidence of external trauma. The car was parked in the driveway at the time and the temperature was above freezing (low 40s) and it was not in the sun. Approximately half the glass was scattered across the driveway - 10+ feet away. The rest of the glass was in the back of the SUV. Fortunately no one was around when this happened - and we were not driving the car at the time. This could have resulted in serious injury to a bystander - or an accident as I can only imagine how much that would alarm the driver. I will be cleaning glass bits from the driveway and back of the SUV for a long time to come! at least it is not too warm out so no is tempted to walk barefoot on the drive. The failure date was Sunday, April 6, 2014.

car   Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of GMC Yukon

The vehicle was a 2006 GMC Yukon. The VIN of this Yukon is 1GKEC13Z06_. In a camping situation we could only exit from the rear hatch and it could not be opened from the inside. Also, when attempting to unlock the mechanism would not unlock the hatch. This was a very unsafe scenario - locked in the car with no door exit. Finally, climbed from the window. Once home we realized how this was such a bad issue so we did research. Apparently since 2006 all suburban, Yukons, and denalis have this recurring issue compounding the already unsafe design of not being able to open rear hatch from the interior. There are thousands of owners that have experienced this issue. It is a design flaw along with a poorly functioning locking mechanism. This will end up in a future fatality. It needs to be recalled immediately. There are homemade fixes on the internet that may also cause new issues. This hatchback/liftgate support device problem happened on 11/08/13.. Read more...

car   Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of Honda Odyssey

The car was a 2008 Honda Odyssey. VIN of the vehicle was 5FNRL38768_. The liftgate struts failed suddenly and no longer support the heavy door. There was no gradual deterioration. Ours is a manual version - not powered and for some reason isn't covered by the recall 12v062000, even though it uses the same part that was determined to be defective in that investagation - NHTSA action number : pe11034. It was determined that it failed at unacceptable rate and the number of complaints from manual liftgates is higher than those of the powered liftgates. This is at least as dangerous as a powered liftgate situation, especially for my wife and 3 young children. The investigation and recall needs to be expanded to cover all models using this part, not just the powered doors. It was Apr. 14, 2014 when this hatchback/liftgate support device issue occurred.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2001 Lexus Ls430. My wife, who is getting over breast cancer, has been hit in the head many times, as I have, by the 2001 LS 430 trunk lid coming down due to moderate winds and just putting groceries in the trunk. I said that at least three dealer service managers have told me that the shocks that are supposed to hold up the trunk are under engineered, and not substantial enough to hold up the trunk lid. This condition gets worse over time, but I did complain about it to sewell Lexus of fort worth many years ago. It was never written up as I was told that the only thing that could be done was to replace those shocks with the exact same shocks. That was unsatisfactory to me at the time, it still is, and I was never told to call the Lexus 800 number until kevin (service mgr. At Lexus of el cajon, CA. ) suggested that I at least try. This is the same problem explained in complaint number 10178801 by "jb". I hope someone at Lexus has improved struts made for this trunk lid and notifies me to have them installed with a recall notice for all 2001 LS 430 owners. This issue happened on Monday, January 22, 2007.

The best we can tell is that the right strut/arm seized and the hinge pins broke, causing the hatch to fall off. We don't have it in the shop yet. It will have to be towed. ********* NHTSA action number : rq08003nhtsa recall campaign number : n/a vehicle make / model: model year(s): Mercury / Mountaineer 2004 manufacturer(s) : Ford motor company component(s) : structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:hinge and attachments structure:body:hatchback/liftgate:support device visibility:glass, side/rear summary: this investigation was opened on June 23, 2008, based on 34 complaints involving eight injuries in which the rear liftgate glass hatch on model year 2004 Ford explorers or Mercury Mountaineers broke off and fell, usually while individuals were operating the glass hatch or loading or unloading items from the rear of the vehicle. Ford conducted recall 04v-442 in 2004 to address similar problems on model year 2002 and certain model year 2003 Ford explorers and Mercury Mountaineers. The information Ford provided in response to odi's information request letter indicated that failures with 2004 vehicles were primarily liftgate glass hatch hinge failures related to corrosion at the hinge pin, whereas the failures that prompted the recall with the earlier models were primarily related to problems with the glass hatch's struts or fracture of a prior hinge design at the boss/bolt connection at the glass. Odi's review of Ford's warranty, complaint, and injury data for the 2004 vehicles indicates that these rates are significantly lower than those for the recalled population. A potential defect trend has not been identified at this time. Odi will continue to monitor complaints and take appropriate action as necessary. This investigation is closed. car   Hatchback/liftgate Support Device problem of Toyota Highlander

The vehicle involved is a 2009 Toyota Highlander. The VIN of the car is JTEES42A89_. Liftgate does will not open. Schaumburg Toyota reported the following on their service report the following: "found auto open & close motor seized. Need: to go to bodyshop - replace l/hinge, motor-door". Toyota schaumburg is speculating (pure speculation) that the car was bumped into and therefore therefore the distances (which distances ?) are skewed. We (owners) believe that no such incidence happened. We e-mailed Toyota (case # 1404300093, walter c. ) who referred us back to joanne joern. Miss joern did call but offered no proof of their speculation (that the car was bumped into), neither did miss joern provide the misalignment numbers. Miss joern did mention that Toyota has known about this problem but they will honor the problem only within 3 months/36,000 miles. The power to my liftgate is now disabled and I would like for Toyota to acknowledge that they have known about this problem and therefore make the liftgate fully functional (power connected) for me. We (owners) are honest when we say that the care was not bumped into from rear-side and we should not be paying for these repairs. I have tried my best to work it out with Toyota corporation and schaumburg Toyota, however, both are trying to deflect the responsibility away from themselves. This hatchback/liftgate support device problem happened on Friday, Apr. 25, 2014.

The vehicle was a 2010 Cadillac Srx. Vehicle identification number (VIN): 3GYFNAEY5A_. Rear power door (liftgate) reverses when opening and shuts by itself. This happens about 75% of the time I open the door. It usually reverses when 1/4 to 3/4 open, then shuts completely. Re-opening the door normally succeeds without a problem. I was hit on the head last year by this. The local Cadillac dealer is unable to fix this and they say detroit has no answer. This problem occurred on Monday, Mar. 1, 2010.
