Tailgate problem is a common vehicle problem that happens to most car brands and models. The following is a sample list of Tailgate problems reported in most popular vehicles.
The vehicle is a 2006 Chevrolet Tahoe. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 1GNEK13T26_. The tailgate actuator will not open the liftgate or glass on the tail liftgate. The vehicle has no key access on the external portion of the vehicle. On the inside of the vehicle there is no manual release for the liftgate. Currently I have no way of opening the liftgate or glass. If there is an accident now, the third row passengers have no means of exiting the vehicle. This is a serious safety concern. This problem occurred on Jan. 14, 2014.

The vehicle involved is a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The VIN of the car is 1GCEC19Z07_. Selected adaptive equipment and suspension and body because there is no place to add tailgate and that is where he problem is - geez - that part makes no senese at all. Tailgate lock on riders side of vehicle does not engage properly. It has been replaced once and greased once at butch ostelete in pascagoula, ms. I called about repair but the person on the phone said they would have to charge me to repair it. The problem is you have to stick your finger in the lock pin and slide it upward to make it engage when the tailgate is closed. This has been on going since I have on the vehicle. It is a defect that could cause someone (like me) to injure their finger in the lock or jolt a persons wrist and elbows (like me) and cause harm. This defect needs to be called to gm attention and have these issues repaired. The failure date was Wednesday, December 11, 2013.

The car was a 2008 Chrysler town and country. The VIN of this vehicle was 2A8HR54P98_. Automatic doors and tailgate do not stop if something is in their path. My wife received a serious bump on her head when the tailgate closed on her, her hand was caught in the door as it was sliding closed and my 2 year old son had his fingers closed in the sliding passenger door. There does not seem to be any or accurate sensors to prevent this and it could result in a very serious injury. I do not need to tell you the consequence of a child's head or torso being crushed. I am truly disturbed by this and I hope you will investigate it fully and find a satisfactory resolve, before there are any other injuries. The dealer simply stated they would reprogram the sensors. They picked the vehicle up and later called to say there was really nothing wrong, that although the door did close on their hand and it did hurt, it eventually stopped and I should tell my 2 year old not to put his hand in the way of the closing doors. I don't even know how to respond to their reply. This tailgate problem happened on August 28, 2008.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2004 Dodge Durango. The VIN of this vehicle was 1D4HB48D94_. 2004 Durango has rusted through on several spots. Tailgate and wheel wells. This is excessive for a vehicle it's age that has been garaged and well cared for. I suggest that the anticorrosion coating was faulty. I have seen many Durango's this age with the same trouble spots. This tailgate issue occurred Monday, April 30, 2012.

Body issues: I have a 2005 Ford Explorer and have never been in a car accident. My tailgate somehow develope a crack that goes through where the Ford logo is. Nothing happened to the SUV to cause the crack. It just somehow happened on it's own. I beileve the vehicle is defective or at least the materials used to make the vehicle. Eletrical issues: another issue I have is with the electrical. My turn signals (most times) do not work. I have to manually move it up and down when turning. When it does work, it goes really fast. My reverse notification no longer works for some strange reason. Also, my radio goes louder when I turn it down. I have to turn it off for a little while, turn it back on then try to lower the volume. This problem occurred on Mar. 3, 2014.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2004 Ford Escape. The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 1FMCU93114_. A rattling from rear passenger wheel area. Upon investigation to see what it was I found that the upper connection point of the shock tower was completely rusted through and was barely connected to the rest of the body. Within a day or two afterwards the upper part had completely seperated and the shock was bouncing around freely. I removed the shock yesterday (5/1/2014) as it had pushed up (since it has no resistance or means to hold it compressed) and punched a hole through the plastic interior side wall liner in the tailgate area. There is now an aproximatly 10" square hole in the side of my vehicle where I can see the tire and road. I will need to seal the opening to keep road water from entering. Photos can be provided. This tailgate issue occurred 04/28/14.

The reporting person owns a 2004 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving less than 10 mph, the abs engaged independently. The vehicle was not taken for inspection or repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). In addition, the contact lso stated that the passenger's side tailgate became fractured. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 40000. This issue happened on Mon., Apr. 22, 2013.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2006 GMC Envoy. The tailgate will occasionally not open. The actuator has already been replaced. The electrical system seems to also "act"up when this happens. The remote takes several times to open the doors. We have replaced the battery several times, the dome light does not come on anymore, the stereo turns off immediately when you turn the engine off, instead of staying on until you open one of the doors. This tailgate problem happened on Friday, May 11, 2012.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2008 Honda Pilot. Rear tailgate latch mechanism fell out of mount. 2 of 3 screws were found completely loose after partial removal of rear tailgate interior trim. Issue happened in store parking lot loading groceries; tailgate would not latch shut and drove home at slow speed with all dome lights on (Honda does not give a position switch option for door as I have seen in many other vehicles owned). Due to serious safety issue of having unlatched tailgate opted to effect immediate repair upon return to home address. I have reinstalled all 3 screws and used blue loctite thread lock as it appears no thread lock was previously used. I am a mechanical engineer and was concerned that a) very small diameter screws relative to size of item being secured and b) no locking mechanism to hold torque on the screws. There are many complaints of various Honda models with similar issue on internet at Honda owner discussion boards. There are even step by step instructions with photos how to fix posted on a Honda owners discussion board; yet when I check Honda's official TSB list - there is not even 1 TSB for the tailgate latch loose issue; so it is likely many owners (as myself) have opted to take the diy approach for the solution. My professional opinion is this is poorly designed since the attachment mechanism (3 screws) to hold the latch body to the tailgate panel could become loose from nominal in-city daily driving (proof that the torque on the fasteners is not holding under normal use). It was Saturday, March 22, 2014 when this tailgate issue occurred.

The VIN of this Odyssey is 5FNRL18654_. I started leasing Honda Odyssey 2004 from Honda dealership in April 2004 for 3 years, has not any problem with vehicle in that period (warranty period). I bought after lease and all problems started. 1): radio stopped working, Honda replaced "free" because I bought additional 2 year warranty with $100 deductible, 2): back side window also stopped on open position, Honda fixed for $100 deductible, (past 4 years both side windows doesn't work), 3): (one of major problems for blue color Odyssey's this year), paint started peeling from hood, roof, under glass of both side sliding doors, around back both side windows and whole paint on tailgate, Honda covered only hood, roof and around back both side windows, when asked to paint rest of places they said don't have instruction about other spots from Honda (its was very funny, like: "doctor know better, are you dead or alive"), now Honda offers me for paint it with discounted price. 4) transmission fails, couldn't get any gear until resetting from hole top of steering will, changing trans oil didn't resolve this problem (this what mechanic told me) in Honda dealership 5) in 2011 on scheduled oil change mechanic told me to change all engine mounts and front shocks for $2500, hydraulic engine mount got leak and broke other mounts, I bought all engine mounts and front shocks for $700 and changed my self. . . . Now srs electronic control unit. . . . I guess its too many defects and problems for this car. . . . Btw I'm a first and only owner of this Odyssey and got only 96k miles on it. . . . The failure date was August 25, 2010.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2012 Hyundai Tucson. The car had a crash. I bought a new car. 3 1/2 months later , I was rear-ended. I took car to dealership to get tailgate and pan and bumber repaired. When we picked up vehicle, stong toxic fumes from repair were so strong that we could not drive car. Instant headache, upper respritory aggravation, sore throat, burning eyes. Car has been to repair shop numerous times and months later still causes illness in family. At one time that I drove car I almost lost conciousness. I have informed Hyundai dealership several times. I informed Hyundai corporation. Problem persists consistently for 8-9 months and after numerous trips to dealership. The dog foams and vomits before car starts moving. The failure date was 11/05/12.

The car is a 1997 Infiniti Qx4. When driving, if you accidentally press the rear tailgate button, (which is located beside the cruise control button), the window goes up! pets or kids could get out at highway speeds. You have to pull off road in order to close rear window hatch. Suggestion: to have safety in place so button cant be engaged when vehicle is in drive. ( this is the case in chevy blazers-my former vehicle).

The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was 1C4BJWCG7D_. On a 2013 Jeep Wrangler when the tailgate was opened on a slight incline the tailgate broke through the tailgate stopper that connects the vehicle body to the tailgate and bent the hinges that hold the tailgate. Jeep dealer said the cause was our negligence. This is a brand new Jeep. Negligence--you have to be kidding. We simply opened the tailgate and the hinges are so poorly designed they did hot prevent the tailgate from bending the hinges. Dealer simply replaced the tailgate stop at our expense but did not replace the hinges. Three months later we opened the tailgate in our garage and the tailgate stopper broke again. This time the dealer replace the tailgate stop, the plastic hinge covers and the hinges again at our expense. This is a known defect documented numerous times on Jeep forums and yet Jeep won't acknowledge a poor design of the tailgate hinges and do the repairs under warranty. This problem occurred on Jan. 23, 2013.

Our 2012 Jeep Wrangler unlimited has stock wheels and rims, in fact it has the smallest stock wheels and rims offered by the manufacturer. We have not "upsized" our wheels and rims with aftermarket products. The metal "strap" (that's what they call it at the dealer) on the tailgate that keeps it from swinging wide open broke, and when it broke it swung open and broke the tail light lens and housing. The dealer replaced it under warranty, and within a week it broke a second time. The dealer replaced it a second time. Again, within a week, it broke for a third time. It was replaced under warranty again. This was just yesterday. The dealer says it replaces these all the time, at least one a week. This is a faulty part that should be recalled. I have looked on Jeep Wrangler forums and lots of people have this problem, and lots of people have it happen multiple times. This tailgate issue occurred 10/04/2013.

The vehicle having this issue was a 2004 Lincoln Aviator. I purchased this vehicle as a certified used vehicle. It had an extended warranty. Once it expired I've experienced every single complaint people have stated online about this vehicle. As of today (12/02/13) it still has only 74,000 miles on it and the latest problem is the transmission needs to be replaced but they don't know why. I am a stay at home mom and wear-and-tear on it is very minimal (grocery shopping, to and from school, etc. ). I have never had so many problems on a "so called" luxury vehicle before! I've had bad coils in cylinders 3, 4, 5 (twice), and 7 replaced under Lincoln's recall. The tailgate panel cracked (just like all the other people who own this vehicle and the mountaineers have complained about), but they won't fix it. In addition, a white plastic piece fell out of the top half of the tailgate and now it will not close anymore therefore I can no longer take it through car washes. The bracket for the sun visor on my passenger side completely deteriorated and caused the visor to suddenly dangle from the roof of my car while driving. Now, I cannot flip it up and it causes a blind spot. There is also something faulty with the brake light switch which drains my battery on a regular basis and I have to have my jumped. The brake light switch has been replaced 3 times now because it is has shorted out. To complicate matters, every time I take the car to the dealership for these repairs, they insist on doing a "diagnostics check" and every time they want to charge a fee for this service. Every time the price is different. . . Some times its $50, sometimes its $100. This vehicle is a lemon and I will never buy a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury again. This tailgate problem happened on Tue., Jul. 23, 2013.

The car was a 2009 Mazda Tribute. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was 4F2CZ027X9_. Rear tailgate door switch occasionally does not operate when depressed. While trying to open the tailgate/rear hatch entrance the switch that is depressed will not open the tailgate causing entry to the rear to be accessed through the vehicles aft passenger's doors. This has been an ongoing problem since new and every time the vehicle has been to the dealer the problem is not repeatable creating a now out of warranty issue. Failure of the inability to access the rear of the vehicle should be considered for a recall. In the event of an accident the inability to reach someone trapped in the back of the vehicle creates a serious safety concern that must be addressed. This tailgate issue occurred May 5, 2012.

The car involved was a 2008 Mercury Mariner. The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was 4M2CU87158_. Large rusting areas in back seat doors, rear wheel wheels and tailgate. Concern lies with rust that cant be seen weakening structural integrity of doors and/or wheel wells and/or tailgate. First noticed blistering paint in 2011 and the problem has grown since. Warranty was of no help. Have noticed similar patterns on numerous Mariners of similar model years, so this has to be a manufacturer defect of some kind. Again concern lies mostly with rust that can't be seen. It was 06/01/11 when this tailgate issue happened.

2005 Nissan Frontier 4x4 crew cab. Poor design of tailgate hinge assembly drivers side, appears that was designed to withstand lighter tailgate. As I understand Nissan has redesigned and changed tailgate assembly for 2006 and newer models. My wife was driving the truck and noticed the vehicle following came to a complete stop since the tailgate on my truck was dragging on the road and held partially still connected to truck body with cable assembly. Hinge appeared cracked and pulled from body of truck. Tailgate was always in locked position since we have issues with thieves in our area and was still in locked position when I took it out of truck bed. Obviously at higher speeds the failure of the hinge assembly could compromise the safety of following vehicles in the event the tailgate became removed and fell off onto roadway. This issue happened on Friday, December 30, 2011.

The car involved was a 2006 Toyota 4runner. In September 2012 I noticed paint blistering on the tailgate of my 4runner. I now (8/13) have rust through originating from the inside middle of the tail gate. I took the truck to my local body shop and was told that this was a common problem with the 06 4runner. It was caused by a sound deafening material on the inside of the gate. "the material gets wet and holds the moisture causing body rot". This shop has repaired other 4runners with this problem. I also own a 1994 isuzu trooper with no body rust that sits next to it in my driveway. I was told by the Toyota rep (oakdale Toyota in NY) that it was out of warranty and they could not help me. I also have extensive rust on the undercarriage. The truck has never been off road before. This tailgate problem happened on September 14, 2012.

The vehicle identification number (VIN) of the car was 5TELU42NX8_. My 2008 Toyota Tacoma has a factory bed extender. Which allows use to use the tailgate as part of the truck bed. Due to the small 5 ft bed. Load the weight of a rototiller into the truck cased the tailgate to bow and become unstable. They do not have any weight limit or restriction posted. If they sell parts to use the tailgate to support items it should not fail under such light loads. 2008 Toyota Tacoma tailgate is dangerously weak, and is unable to support what most consider normal weight for a truck tailgate. Although substandard design may be considered "buyer beware", truck buyers expect a tailgate to support the weight of normal truck use activities. Toyota provides no warning or caution anywhere that the tailgate is of insufficient strength to perform normal 1/2-ton truck duties, and typically (per internet forum threads) tells their customers that it is their problem and that they should not expect to be able to safely use the tailgate for anything more than hiding the inside of the bed. Since Toyota has produced a substandard designed part, they should have provided a visual warning on the part to alert customers to the danger their product imposes if used in a traditional manner. Since they did not do so, they should be held liable to provide a redesigned part to their customers or full restitution for the purchase price of the vehicles. A google or similar internet search on "tacoma tailgate forum" will substantiate my statements beyond my personal experience with the tailgate bending. This tailgate problem happened on Jul. 2, 2013.

The vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN) is 2V8HW34159_. The rear tailgate of my 2009 Volkswagen Routan opened up automatically while the car was in gear and in motion which, according to the owner's manual, it should not do even if the power tailgate button is pressed. This happened while the car was being pulled into the garage which resulted in the rear windshield shattering upon contact with the garage door opening. The car was brought to the local Volkswagen dealership the same day and nothing was found in the diagnostics that pointed to a failure of any sort. There were previous electrical issues experienced with the car not reported to the dealer, including with the tailgate, that were not as serious and that corrected themselves after shutting off and restarting the car. The vehicle involved is a 2002 BMW X5. Two safety concerns: (1) led on dashboard faded out. Key driving information is now not available in order to safely drive the car. (2) rear tailgate will now unexpectedly un-latch and pop open in which I have to pull over, get out of the car and close it. It is caused by poor sealing which doesn't keep out rain and snow. Once I close the tailgate, it will eventually open again! BMW knows about these safety problems on the X5 and would not help with material and labor cost of $ 1565.
